Are there any games that you've played that are similar to this, that you would recommend INSTEAD of X3.

freelancer?

X3 is okay but it is singleplayer and therefore gets boring personally....theres only so much empire building thats fun with out real competition...I lost interest rather quickly, honestly was a game I was like wtf why did i spend money on this

Eve is similar in many regards except its multiplayer online.
