I was quite saddened to read of the death of Arthur C Clarke in the paper as I was travelling home yesterday. Okay, so he was over 90, but it was one of my ambitions to be able to meet him some day.

Despite being known as one of the great sci-fi authors, he was also a scientist, predicting in the 1930s, man on the moon by 1970. He predicted the use of satellites for communications, something that is common today and he was the discoverer of geostationary orbit, sometimes known as Clarke's orbit after him, the orbit whereby a satellite remains constantly above the same point on the Earth's surface. Finally, Clarke's Law is attributed to him after a phrase written in one of his sci-fi books.

EDIT: I should add that it was from reading 2001 when I was 12 that I decided that I wanted to work in the space industry. That goal has been at the forefront of my career aims ever since.

I hadn't heard this yet.

:( :( :(

I was captivated by Clarkes works in the early 70's back when I was a kid and read every science fiction book I could get my hands on.

Truely a giant

I hope he finds that alien civilization in the afterlife................
