My mom sent me this today, kind of interesting considering all the debates about privacy and subpoenas for records from Google and what not... Anyone else hear about this/use it?

I played around with it for about 5 minutes, its very different from google in its displaying of results, the interface reminds me a bit of apple products. I think at this point Google has the market pretty firmly with the extensive products they offer from email to directions etc... but still interesting to see this new search engine pop-up.

I tried it a few times yesterday and had terrible results. Privacy issues don't affect me at all, but I imagine Google will have answers to all this.

It's good to have alternatives to use but Google has done nothing but make the 'net an easier place to navigate for me.

Saw an article on it on the BBC News website. Apparently it was set up by former employee of Google.

still begs the questions why are they investing without obvious financial gain...you don't invest if your not going to make money in the long run

not necessarily. Thus is the concept of freeware!

And if the investors are making money in other areas they can afford to spend it and make a loss.

There was a time when Google didn't have any ads, well before it became the marketing behemoth it is today.

There will be a time in the near future when people realize that Google is a hypocricy. It's business mantra is "do no evil" but they're quickly falling into the role of "the man".

People will flock to what they perceive as the next big "anti-establishment" search engine/application/hardware vendor and rinse and repeat.

Indeed!

Or in computing terms: open source is the way forward.

Tried it a couple of times, also with terrible results.

I searched for my company, which comes up on Google, but didn't on Cuil. No respect from me after that!

I sincerely doubt that the investors aren't interested in making money with this new site.

Unfortunately, that is probably true, although there does exist some investors who are interested in running something at a loss or without guaranteed income. The backers of Ubuntu is a prime example of this.

What I suspect with Cuil is that they are giving is a run-in time to see how it does. If successful, they'll start implementing ads or something similar. If not, they'll cut their losses and close it down.

I don't understand the unfortunately part of that, but investors that don't want money back are called philanthopists. :)
