Question:
Would a sandbox MMORPG with user content - in the fashion of Wiki - and self policed - ala EvE - be widely accepted?

guess it depends on what you mean by sandbox and user generated.

City of Hero's is introducing a mission architect in their Issue 14 update, allowing users to make missions that other users can enjoy, haven't read to much about it but something like that is definitely a positive.

On the other hand a sandbox is good, open-ended gameplay is good. But complete lack of story line or any real mission system can be devastating (part of SWG problem).

User content also can have high entrance barriers, knowledge to make content (are we talking I need to make a 3D model of a House, or just build something using a creator like Spore offers?, am I programming things or just using a variety of reprogrammed options, dropping NPC, minimal programming knowledge needed (at a quick glance this is what CoH seems to be doing).

Anytime you have a high knowledge barrier to user content you end up with creators and leachers. One thing I can say in favor of spore or sim cities old building creator is there is not high knowledge barrier, however atl east in Spore gameplay may reflect that lack of depth

Also graphics tend to suffer in these types of games (second life for isntance?)

Bottom line isnt SecondLife and similar games essential all user generated content? I've glanced at it but like I said before their is a serious knowledge barrier to using such a game.
