So I was having a recent RTS craving, I checked out Empire Total War and it beats up my machine pretty nicely (3.0ghz, 1gb ram, Nvidia 6800 256mb). So was looking at Civ IV as a possibility, obviously their are expansions and the newer CivIV: Colonization.

So recommendations of which Civ IV products are must haves? or recommendations for a different addiction...err game?

Recently I've been playing Guild Wars (big suprise), did a trial of CoH and a healthy doss of FPS (BF2,2142,CoD4)...I need a new fix.

I wouldn't call Civ4 a RTS. Turn based strategy. Very good game.

Colonization is also very good. I have the new one but have not played it much but played the shit outta its very early predecessor. Wicked good times and very much the "one more turn" gameplay.

I bought a buddy Suns of a Solar Empire for Christmas and he loves it. It is either RTS or turn-based as well. Space game in any event. It was highly rated on IGN and Gamespy so I ran with it. Good purchase from what I understand.

yea i used RTS very loosely

I was also looking at Mass Effect more of an RPG type game but the min specs claim it needs the 6800 GT graphic card min and I have a 6800, so not sure how well my system would handle that

Thanks for reminding me that I haven't even touched my copy of ME for the 360. Madson really enjoyed his play through of it a while back iirc.

I think Supreme Commander would be something you'd like...

I can barely play it with my Geforce 6600 GT though... miss my Radeon X1350 Pro

I have Civ IV and the 1st expansion and I have also downloaded a massive mod from http://www.civfanatics.com/ that adds about 70 - 80 new civs and leaders. It's the Civ gold mod IIRC.

This runs fine on my machine which is not quite a good as yours.

This is an awesome game and if you have never played Civ shame on you :P

I thought Sins of a Solar Empire was more of a RTS, I had it briefly but ended up returning it for credit.

Get Civ4 Beyond the Sword. That's the latest expansion and should include previous expansions when you install it. The "Next War" mod that comes with it takes you further into the future with large mechs, giant tanks, etc.

As for Sins of a Solar Empire, I don't understand why so many game review sites put it in a 4x type game category. It's an RTS, plain and simple. you build improvements to harvest resources to build ships, in real time. The maps are MASSIVE. It's fun, but after awhile, the glossy finish wears away and the same RTS mechanics we're used to.

I'll again be the token "Total War Series is the best" guy. Seriously though. If you like RTS and Turn-based Strat, get the TW games if you don't have them.
