Well I'm sure I put a post up about this at some point, but I can't find it any more.

Anyone played Mass Effect. I only ask because the sequel is coming out this week and I haven't played the original. The more I look into it, the more I'm interested.

I originally didn't buy it because of the DRM protection that was put on it. I fundamentally objected to that and it caused me to not buy the game. Apparently, EA have released a tool or patch that disables this harsh protection and I think Mass Effect 2 is just going for a simple serial key. So my fundamental objections no longer apply. It also looks like a damned good game (which you'd expect from Bioware). Only downside is that I'd probably have to take a holiday in order to find time to play it!

Yup, I finished it and it was pretty damn good.
RPG/FPS mix, huge universe, good story and LOTS of voices. I'm pretty happy I kept my saves for the second opus !

I recommend you to play it before the 2 !

What's the state of play regarding security requirements? what do you have to do to get playing?

Also, have you tried any of the DLC?

I am on my second play through on my main character atm... preordered 2 and have downloaded just waiting for it to unlock (Direct2Drive).

I didn't notice the DRM on the first one, maybe its because I got it through direct2drive, dunno I install toss my key in and play...

The second is using DLC to encourage purchasing as opposed to other DRM methods. (you only receive the key to the DLC network with a new copy and they have a content update available at launch).

Don't pay for the first's DLC, the free Bringing Down the Sky (with valid key and signing up on the bioware social site) is okay...nothing special. Pinnacle station is the one that costs money and from all accounts its pretty meh...though you can get an apartment...for all the good that does you? Havn't paid but thats what I have heard.

Regardless great trilogy (there will be a third) and your choices carry over from game to game in various ways.

I must admit, I am rather tempted to buy it.

I was very impressed with the first one. I am slowly playing through Dragon Age but fully expect to pick this up at some point.
