So it has a big following here in the UK. The new season has just started a few weeks ago and I'm really loving it.

Anyone else following it? I think it's running in the US as well at the moment. Not sure though.

I watched the first 2 seasons or so on netflix, had trouble staying with it, didn't really like the switching of Dr's. I really loved the Torchwood spin-off though.

I have been wondering about this show for a while now. I haven’t seen it. Many people over at the “Sword & Laser” book club I belong too are discussing it. Belmont has never watched Dr Who and now the fans want to take away her geek card. From what I can read there are many who love it. And they are talking about a new different direction they are taking the show in this new season.

I need to get a hold of a few seasons and see what it is about.

I'll have to put together a little history of it. But the concept as a whole, I believe, is the UK's longest running sci-fi show (having started in 1963). It was canned in '89 and then rebooted in 2005. Season 1 of the reboot is probably the best place to start if you're new to it all and can pick up on some of the other history on the way.

I'll write more tomorrow.

Dr. Who is a superhero for smart people.

Start with the rebooted series, as the old series has its charms, but there is so much to go through, and in all honesty, it was pretty cheesy.

Season 1 of the reboot had Christopher Eccelstein as the Dr. He was a great guy to relaunch the show, but he left after Season 1, to be replaced by the amazing David Tennet, who was the Dr. for seasons 2-4. Toward the end of Tennet's run, things got a little wierd, but I loved every minute of it. The newest Dr. is Matt Smith, this is his second season as the Dr., and he is great.

Backstory in a nutshell... The Dr. is a Time Lord, a race of people who are now all but extinct due to the Time Wars. When they are critically injured, or near death, they can regenerate. That is how the Dr. is played by different actors over the years. They are not immortal, as they can be killed while regenerating, or obliterated beyond saving before regeneration. The Dr. has a TARDIS, a time / space machine, that he stole, er, borrowed.

He has "companions", humans that he takes with him on his adventures.

It is an amazing show, and it is must watch TV for me above all other shows. If you want to start watching it, which you should, Netflix has the first 4 seasons on instantview now. I would recommend it very highly.

In regards to Torchwood, it is a great show in its own right, its a spin off of Dr. Who. It has its long awaited season 4 starting on STARZ this July. WOOT WOOT !!

Mantison great to see you!

Thanks for the lead on Torchwood! I'll have to look in on that show.

That's a good summary Mantison. I was going to go into somewhat more depth about the history, but that's probably not necessary. Besides, there's far more than I could ever write on it on Wikipedia!

I love Dr. Who. I remember seeing the old series in the early 80's, usually on a PBS channel late at night, and always had that burned into my mind as what the show was like. Never watched more than 10 mis of up until about 7 months ago I started watching season 1 of the rebooted series. I was hooked, but Eccelson never got me engaged in the character - I enjoyed the world of the Doctor. Then came Tennet and I became an addict. After much unwarranted worridom about the newest Doctor, I'm enjoying the show even more. I've got a great pic of the TARDIS on my Windows phone lock screen, and I'm looking for a great desktop TARDIS for my work office. I'm geeking out to the show now. It's shameful. :P

As far as Torchwood I would add that it is much more accessible as a show - Dr. Who is fairly unique - Torchwood is a bit more mainstream.

Fair number of spoilers in that for those that haven't seen the episodes!

Should also mention that the Wikipedia article on Doctor Who is pretty good.

After watching episode 5 (The Rebel Flesh), a friend and I got discussing the various questions raised in the plot, particularly from episodes 1 and 2 (I'll not state what these are to protect those who haven't watched them yet (I'm also not sure how far behind the UK the US episodes are, if at all)) and suggesting our theories. In the end we concluded that whatever actually happens is probably far more complex and fantastic than anything we could come up with.

So then on Saturday just gone, I watched the conclusion to the story started in episode 5 where there was a big reveal (as had been announced there would be in other media). Afterwards, I send my friend the message: Well, as expected, I did not see that coming!

Such is the joy of Doctor Who!

What is really going to get me though is that there is going to be a huge cliffhanger at the end of episode 7 and then there will be a hiatus for couple of months before the second half of the season starts. That wait will be unbearable!!

So I watched episode 7 last Saturday. I shan't spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet. However the grand reveal, which I correctly guessed beforehand, I have to say, was awesomeness personified! All the more so for having proved I guessed right!
