Post subject:  Kerbal Space Program (Space Program Sandbox)

So I was made aware of this game over the weekend and realized it was my duty to tell all of you... Except, I was too busy sending rockets into space in my free time so I had to wait until today!

The game is exactly what it sounds like. Build rockets, probes, landers, space stations and launch them into to space (you can also build high-altitude "spaceplanes" with horizontal launches). Once in space you can orbit Kerbal, land on the Mun (moon) explore new worlds, build spacestations through complex docking maneuvers and multiple launches....

The game is still in development, but it has gotten past most of the early development growing pains and is polished enough for mass consumption.

My recommendation is to try it for a few hours without modding, but adding MechJeb (search the spaceport) after a few hours adds some autopilot / navigational computer / data views (tonnage, thrust to weight ratio) components that are helpful. Especially if you watch what it does and then try to mimic it (thats how I figured out how to do gravity turns).

About Kerbal Space Program
Kerbal Space Program is a multi-genre game where the players create their own space program.

In KSP, you must build a space-worthy craft, capable of flying its crew out into space, without killing them. At your disposal is a collection of parts, which must be assembled to create a functional ship. Each part has its own function and will affect the way a ship flies (or doesn't). So strap yourself in, and get ready to try some Rocket Science!

Main Features:
•The Vehicle Assembly Building and the Space Plane Hangar allows players to build spacecraft out of any imaginable combination of parts.
•Fully-fledged, Physics-based Flight Simulation ensures everything will fly (and crash) as it should.
•Take your Kerbal crew out of the ship and do Extra Vehicular Activities
•Fly out to Moons and other Planets
•Procedural Terrain delivers detailed terrain at a vast scale. The Kerbal Planet is 600km in radius!
•Mod-enabled, allows players to create new content and modify the game.
•Ship systems. Keep an eye out for engine temperatures and fuel levels, and try not to explode.
•Build ships with multiple stages, and jettison parts away as they burn out.
•Full control over the staging sequence allows for complex ships and advanced functionality.

Planned Features:
•Take on Missions to attract interest in your Space Program. Or use the Mission Planner to create your own missions.
•Manage your Space Program. Hire astronauts, train them, research and improve parts.
•Build Space Stations, and surface bases on other worlds.
•And a whole lot more!

KSP is still under development, so many things are not yet as they should be. We are working hard to be constantly improving the game however, and it will be regularly updated with bug fixes and new content, so make sure to check back for new versions. We are also always listening to feedback from the players, and we welcome ideas and suggestions.

Currently the game is being built as an open sandbox. There are no objectives yet. You're free to build anything you can think of, and fly it wherever you want, even into orbit.

The first versions are free to download and play, and will remain so forever. During development, the game is available for purchase at a discounted price, which we will gradually increase up to its final retail price as the game nears completion. So by ordering early, you get the game for a lot less, and you'll get all future updates for free.

Have Fun!

I included that just for you. Not sure if the version from their website supports it or just the steam version... ymmv

The Linux version is available through the website as well as Steam.

I must say I have to curse you now as this game has now sucked up several hours of my time!

My Munar landings need some work... Watching the autopilot do it is a bit discouraging.

Added a few photos to steam of my crash landing. I would inline them, but they are huge.

Ah, so this is what has been distracting DF from finishing another character and getting the RP sessions rolling! I see. It does look like a lot of fun, and probably very difficult. I'm not sure I have the time nor patience to try this one out. It may have to wait a while.

Hurrah! I docked! ... It's really challenging. I shall have to have several more goes to get the hang of it. The people who do videos on YouTube make it look easy!

PLaying the demo. Learned to orbit last night and have managed to orbit Mun today...

Have crashed 3 times on Mun and have several skeletons in solar orbit...

Lost count on those who sacrificed themselves while I have tried to reach orbit.

9 months has passed since last someone wrote in this topic (me).

Fairly proficient in Kerbal. Have made some extreme rockets and can also make SSTO's with ease.

Though V-TOL's are another matter.

I do use some mods, from to time, but am trying to keep it at a minimum.

My current project is making a long train-like spaceship, consisting of nothing but probes which will detach and land on a surface. The Core of the ship will be a mothership which will retrieve the probes that has returned and bring them back to the homeplanet.

I've played around with it from time to time. But with each mission taking at least an hour, I don't have that much time available. I tend to use MechJeb. I'm sure some consider it cheating but I've done the launches the hard way and I get bored of that pretty quickly!

Never figured out how to make MechJeb work.

Later on I started to be annoyed by so many who use automated systems.
I usually don't have a problem with people using mechjeb. The times I am annoyed are when they say "look. it is easy." when talking about launching a 70+ tonnes piece of hardware and then successfully transfer it to another planet.

Some people have too much time for practise! :)

Those nerds! The nerve!

... ah well. I ought to spend less time on gaming now a days. Being head of IT at a leading arctic scientific research institute does take it's toll on the time schedule.

KSP recently released an update that included a mission made in collaboration with NASA. Very cool. I haven't tried it yet though.

Post subject:  Re: Kerbal Space Program (Space Program Sandbox)

I've been playing for only three or four months. I finally got it after having it on my Steam Wishlist since you guys first started talking about it. A co-worker also recommended it, and I love it.

It has irritated my wife a great deal, having this game. I at times do become very, very fixated. Anyway, I'm certain I've played several hundred hours. I play will tons of mods. FAR, Deadly Re-entry, KW Rocketry, TAC Life Support, B9, Interstellar, Alarm Clock, ALCOR, Enhanced NavBall, Engineer, MechJeb, ScanSat, lots of beautification mods, and tons more. My GameData folder is 2.5 GB all in its own.

I need to get around to uploading a bunch of screenshots. I've just gotten a 4-Kerbal mission to Duna (in a 10 Kerbal ship, with enough life-support to last me for 4k+ Kerbin days), and successfully put a permanent science base on the surface. Unfortunately, I didn't quite understand the Interstellar power parts and requirements, so it doesn't actually do anything but look freaking awesome. I had a separate ascent/return vehicle to get me back to my orbiting mothership.

Currently I'm trying to build some power infrastructure, and will start making a Munar base to make sure it all works before I go to Duna again. Then, next stop, the Joolian system!

It is my humble opinion that this may be the single greatest game ever created. The base game is amazing, and awesome, and wonderful. The modding community makes the game easily 1000x better than the base game. This game actually makes me regret my decision to change majors out of Astrophysics, and if I could do it all over again, I'd probably become an aeronautical engineer.

(xkcd)

As you may remember, I am an Aerospace Engineer (What's the difference between Aeronautical and Aerospace, I hear you ask? As far as I can tell: absolutely nothing!). Unfortunately, working as such in RL is nowhere near as cool as it sounds, particularly not as the industry stands at the moment. I became an Aerospace Engineer because I wanted to do the stuff that you do in KSP. The answer to the question of why RL is not like KSP is: how many times have your rockets blown up?! And that's the sticking point. Aviation and space are all about safety. Safety is boring, takes 90% of the time worked on the project and requires one hell of a lot of paperwork!

Well, Anton, my hope is that KSP will inspire a new generation towards space exploration. Based on the modding community, I'd say it has a good shot. There are a lot of folk very passionate about this stuff, and it is certainly coming through the translation of the gaming medium very well. It gets me excited about the possibilities out there, and that is no mean trick with my jaded self these days.

If Kerbal paves the way for private space exploration and development, or even sways public opinion back to funding it via governments, I'd say the game would be the most successful game out there. It can do for the younger generation these days what Star Wars, Star Trek, and 2001 did for people our age or older when they were young.

If not, it is still one of the most fun, most ambitious games I've ever played.

I hope so too! But, as you say, even if it doesn't achieve that, playing KSP is like running a space programme, just without all the boring bits!

0.24 of KSP is out now. It has added contracts, funds and reputation to career mode.
