E3 Exclusive: Blizzard Establishes Third Team, New Game Expected

E3 Exclusive: Blizzard Establishes Third Team, New Game Expected Talking to Gamasutra, Frank Pearce, founding member and senior vice president of product development for Blizzard revealed that the company has a third team hard at work on a new title, separate from World of Warcraft and StarCraft II.

The comment came amid discussion of the company's current workforce. "Our global headcount is 2,700," said Pearce, "And most of that is customer service for World of Warcraft! In terms of development staff it’s probably around 350. World of Warcraft is about 135 people, 40 for Starcraft II, 40 for team 3, our cinematics team is about 85 guys. Then there’s sound and Q/A and that sort of thing."

When pressed for details regarding the new project, Pearce was cagey. "Team 3 is working on something really awesome. I can’t give you any hints, but it’s totally awesome."

All attempts to extract additional information were understandably met with looks of shock and horror from Blizzard's director of global public relations, who also attended the meeting.

Gamasutra was able to confirm that, in spite of Rob Pardo's comments at Hollywood and Games that they weren't giving up on StarCraft Ghost, this Blizzard project remains something different. With Blizzcon coming up in mere weeks, it's possible that additional information could be revealed at that time.

I don't think you should read too much into the numbers in relation to WoW. WoW had fewer than 40 people on the team for the majority of pre-launch. Until the game is ready for late Alpha/early Beta there just isn't enough "room" for too many people to work on it.

I don't think we'll ever see another Warcraft RTS game, sadly. Blizzard will use WoW to continue storylines in the WC universe from now on. Doesn't make sense for both WoW and a new WC RTS to exist at the same time.

other continents, other worlds, huge undiscoverred cave systems, there still are ways :)

i don't think they will make a starcraft MMO untill WoW is losing costumers at a fast rate, but then again, they can make it now to have it ready for when that day comes....

World of Starcraft gets my vote. I told ya... repeat of the same marketing plan that made WoW so successful. Warcraft III followed by the MMO made HUGE money. Starcraft II followed by MMO will equal even more success. I'd put money on it.

Not likely. woW is the market leader and it makes no sense to split the userbase in two with a WoStarcraft, especially since starcraft 2 is incoming. I'd says a WoS is likely...in 5-6 years. when wow starts to dwindle, when starcraft 2 will have had its RTS career, and when a competitor will have Blizzard raise the ante to keep its leadership. Which is not going to be warhammer online nor AoC, a PvP game will never have the following woW has even if it's very good. DAoC got to what, 10% of the max EQ playerbase ? If even ?
