http://www.msnbc.com/news/952578.asp?0cv=CA01 Quote: Major power failure across Northeast
Toronto, Detroit also affected by unexplained blackout BREAKING NEWS MSNBC AND NBC NEWS Aug. 14 — A major power blackout hit several major cities in the Northeast, the Midwest and Canada late Thursday afternoon, knocking out electricity to millions of people in New York, Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland and elsewhere. THE BLACKOUT, which sent thousands of New Yorkers streaming into the streets and briefly knocked television networks off the air, could not be immediately explained. Most of the cities are linked on the same regional power grid, however. MSNBC TV showed aerial pictures of fires in the Bronx and Brooklyn. CNN reported that a fire had been reported at the Consolidated Edison plant in New York. The evening rush hour was just beginning, and NBC correspondents described scenes of pandemonium. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Officials of the Homeland Security Department said they had no immediate information on the blackout, which struck cities stretching from Hartford, Conn., and Syracuse, N.Y., west to Detroit and Cleveland and north to northwest Ontario. The entire city of Toronto was affected, MSNBC television reported. Much of New England, however, including all of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire, southern Vermont and eastern Connecticut, were unaffected. How the U.S. power system works This is a breaking news story. Return to MSNBC.com for more details. By MSNBC.com’s Alex Johnson Anyone in or around the affected areas have any stories? |

They said it was just due to overload...lol the first words that came out of the reporters I saw said, "we know it is not due to terrorism." Because, of course, when you think power outages in Canada, you think terrorism /sigh. |

Now people are asking why we don't have some sort of backup system...how the heck would we have a backup system!? Do these people expect us to double the number of power plants so if some overload we can switch over the the backup powerplants? |

My comp is plugged into a "power saver", don't know what to call it correctly, but if the power goes out it will stay on. And as long as the cable company has power, the internet is safe too. Thats me anyway. |

I was joking - I have power. Ever hear of the customer service call when the tech instructed the user to make sure their computer was plugged in after fielding the complaint that the user couldn't see anything on the screen? The user replied he couldn't see because they had lost power. <drumfill> |

Rocklar, that isn't a story. I actually took a call like that when I was AOL tech support. You would not believe the amount of calls we got yesterday afternoon from Time Warner Cable NYC having customers saying their cable and TV was out. We asked them if their lights worked, they said no, and we told them they didn't have power, and hung up. Shortly thereafter, the offices in NYC went down, and we lost all our servers for our apps, but the phone router went down too, so we didn't get any calls, and all the ones we were on were promptly disconnected. We still haven't had any calls yet today, although TWCNYC is up and powered now. |

Hey I see a light!!! Yes I have emerged from the darkness......must buy new batteries for the flashlight. Was without power, internet, etc. for 24 hours. Pretty paralyzing when you think about it, no bank machines, no gasoline pumps, no air conditioning, no television, no telephones that are externally powered, cell phones were hit and miss at best, water pumping stations had no power so limited water availability. ![]() Post 1001! |
