I think I'll take a sampling of questions each week in order to help us understand the benefits and detriments of using armor and how to make armor a more effective part of your game (though it won't be for everyone). This will in turn make me a better crafter (and I placed it here so our visitors can join in). So ask away and I will try to get to them. Thanks QUESTION 1 Rocklar wrote: Is there a way to tell whether or not your armor is already sliced other than having a smuggler tell you he can't do anything more with it? There are 2 types of slices available (and unfortunately they are random at this point): Encumberance and Effectiveness. Encumberance will reduce the amount of stat points needed to equip the given piece of armor. Effectiveness will increase the amount of protection you get from your general effectiveness (not special protection) of your armor. There are no obvious signs (and I will check on this further) that your armor has been sliced. There are things we as armorsmiths can do to help you in this manner. I typically put the effectiveness numbers for resistance in my description. So If I put in 48/14 for my Advanced Chitin it typically means 48 % special protection (kinetic) and 14% effective resists for the rest. If you go in and see the stats saying 48/19 you might know that there was an effectiveness slice for that armor. The same could be true for the stats. My only warning is that this is completely dependant on the armorsmith. One might be able to dupe people unfamiliar with the armor stats. I guess the best protection for this would be to knopw the range of stats for a given set of armor. I'll get back to this issue. If you do an examine you will see text that says Variation of (insert armor base name here). I tested this and any armor that gets experimented will say that. So the officil answer is no way to tell at the moment from an examine. QUESTION 2 Alda Arden wrote: According to the awful Official Strategy guide Chitin has 20 Kinetic Protection, and Padded has 40. Can you suggest an armor to wear to best absorb Melee Damage for the SOLE purpose of getting to Unarmed IV with the least ammount of personal damage?
I Think this is a 2 part question. One what is the best armor for kinetic protection and the second what is best for an unarmed specialist. To the first, I would have to say that Chitin made with Advanced segments seems to provide higher kinetic resists with slightly lowered HAMM stats than kinetic layered ubese or anything else. Now this is with the current bugs in the system. composite and Padded might be better eventually once layers are fixed. I can get around 48% on mine (using very poor quality dantooine bone, but there is no good dantooine bone in the current rotation) As for you, you might like armor that is low in HAMM costs to maintain your stats. If this is not the case go for the Adv Chitin. Otherwise. I might suggest some Mabari Could probably even get an extra 5% with the advanced segment made to modify base resistance values and not the special resistance in this case just heat and not blast). This might provide you some protection (up to 25% kinetic and allow you some freedom of movement) As for the baseline values listed in the Strategy guide. I have read posts of experimentsthat people have performed and they all appear to work off of the same base. So chitin wit hthe same % will stop the same amount at composite with the same % |

Is there a way to tell whether or not your armor is already sliced other than having a smuggler tell you he can't do anything more with it? The armor I bought from you is great - loving the kinetic and energy protection! I just want to make sure I'm being as efficient as possible when wearing it. |

I am planning to level my Unarmed up to Specialist. I have mastered Pistol Specialist so the next step in becoming a Smuggler is to get to Unarmed IV. I currently have Unarmed II and am slowly cracking away towards IV. Melee Damage taken is the Kinetic Protection on an armor, so... which armor would I want to wear as a Brawler in the hopes of absorbing the hand to hand combat damage I take while leveling Unarmed. According to the awful Official Strategy guide Chitin has 20 Kinetic Protection, and Padded has 40. Can you suggest an armor to wear to best absorb Melee Damage for the SOLE purpose of getting to Unarmed IV with the least ammount of personal damage? |
