It is aschool project/essay. and I am really lost.
I can use everything. especially facts, small thing that you don't notice in everyday life, stories.... EVERYTHING.

Whoah... that's a big can of worms, especially in America. This could start all kinds of racial arguments, though hopefully won't.

It conjures up VERY distastefull images in most peoples minds...

Basically (from my limited understanding), they're a... group of mostly White Supremacists that believe that everyone who is not purely white should be killed. They've been linked to burning churches with African American children inside them. They've been linked to hundreds of murders and beatings of Jewish, Asian and African American people. It seems that groups were mostly situated around the Southern and northwestern parts of America, though there doesn't seem to be many left, if any.

My opinion: put anyone found to be a member in prison for life.

To get an accurate (though amusing) idea of this group, watch the movie Porkys II.

Sadly, as long as they are not actively inciting violence towards others, the KKK has just as much right to exist as does any other group. Equal rights and all. But the second they step over the line and incite or suggest violence, they move into an illegal action and are liable to be arrested.

Try looking on the web for some unbiased info on the KKK, start at websites like the ones for TLC, The Discovery Channel, and The History Channel. Also, look at the encyclopedia websites and consult them for more information...

Early history...

Historically the Klu Klux Klan was an organization formed after the American Civil War (1860-64) to combat the "carpet baggers" or individuals from the Northern states who had moved south and freed slaves who were enfranchised after their emancipation during the war. Many of the respected leading political figures in the south were not permitted to vote as a result of their being a part of the government of the Confereracy thus many of these influential persons entered this quasi-secrect organization to exercise what power they could to stop the reforms that the carpet baggers and freed slaves wished to implement.

While some of the reforms were argueably just, some were simply attempts by the carpet baggers to further plunder the riches of the south, after the war by essentially stealing properties, etc.

The Invisible Empire as it was called soon grew in influence and power. Robert E. Lee was asked to become the leader and although he symphazied with the cause he was too ill to assume leadership. another respected southerner, Nathan Bedford Forrest, became the first leader.

After political power was regained by "white" southerners and the north, or Union, as it was called removed its troops many of the early influential members left as their mission had been largely accomplished. In the late 1800s Nathan Bedford Forrest resigned and left the organization. Most of the groups disbanded as well.

After the turn of the century the KKK began to grow again. It was more strictly a racist organization from that point on.
