It's been too long since I read the book - 9/22 may have been their birthday in the book or it may have been Tolkein's b-day. Dunno.

Yes Acritus, it's in the book, (and even in the movie if i remember right). September 22nd is the birthday of Bilbo and Frodo both. I read an article a while ago about the significance of some of the dates in LOTR, and it would seem that Tolkien never does anything out of coincidence or without significance. Sept. 22 is apparently some sort of Norse Festival that was celebrated. Don't remember now what it was they celebrated, but ah well. Just some trivia for you.

It's close to Sep. 23, which is the Fall Equinox.
