Do yall think freedom of speech applies to online forums such as this one? I have having a debate with a few friends who Mod a forum where they edit members posts without letting them know about it or asking.

Its not illeagal but is it immoral even if these people are breaking minor forum rules such as all caps and other minor things such as dead links?

Just want some opinons cause right now I am fighting an up hill battle.

If this were a public forum, funded by the government, I'd be more likely to say yes.

As it is, this is a private forum and the owner of the site determines what may be said here. Those that act on the behalf of the person who owns this site (admins, etc) enforce the guidelines set forth by the site owner. It may be legally permissable to say certain things here, but since participants are here as guests of the owner, they may be required to act in a manner in accordance with the owners wishes.

Something along the lines of this: it's legal for you to smoke a (regular and legal!) cigarette on the sidewalk. If you follow that sidewalk into my house, I'm going to ask you to put out the cigarette or leave.

TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED LIKE SHOUTING, RIGHT? If you are shouting in public you could be cited for disturbing the peace. So that isn't allowable speech necessarily.

Dead links is like false advertising which is also illegal and restricted.

I like fairly moderated forums. It keeps the deadbeats out and I have less wasted time.

I agree with those points. My only arguement is that in the spirt of a community, such as these forums, it is best if you treat the members with respect. My question is what makes Obo not change this message around without notifying me first or asking for permission? Maybe becuase he is a nice guy or doesnt care at all (ie not a Forum Nazi)

Its just irking me on this other forum, the Mods are doing nothing wrong, they are inforcing the rules they set forth, its just that they change personal posts around without noitifing, asking or give warning to the author.

Meh, I guess I took this forum for granted...

I go to a forum pretty regularly, or at least used to, and still do occassionaly, where editing is common place, generally used for comedic effect. Of course, people are sometimes banned for comedic effect, too. Everyone knows about all this, everyone is amused by it, and no one has a big problem about it, usually. Of course, this comes and goes, as the mood of people changes.

You have to participate by the forum rules. You have to allow what happens as part of the forum environment. You have to abide by anything that the owner of the forum decides. If you disagree with it, the only thing you can do is to post elsewhere.

Also, good luck have any kind of intellectual property rights to anything you post on the web in forums, etc.

theres a difference between Avian and other Forums...Avian is a tight group...no one goes off and starts spamming or flaming on bad days. Larger and more public forums are places where animosity between certain members is common and all that kinda stuff plays apart. At most forums I vist though the Mods don't Edit peoples post unless its on a topic forbidden (porn, warez etc...) although they do lock topics often enough...and Nuke large signitures
