That's right. My mid-life crisis. I have this urge to play an instrument. I love listening to jazz and now I want to take part in making jazz of my own.

I've been doing my homework on the various brands of Trumpets. Two brands that seem to appear most often (on the American scene) is the Yamaha and Bach. I've also learned that there are very good student instruments on the market for under $300. I guess my post is a question to all you musicians in real life. Do you play the trumpet? Have you played the trumpet? Do you know someone that plays the trumpet personally? If so, then can you post a link to a site or give a recommendation on a brand, model trumpet that is a very good solid student level instrument (damn near professional), that I can appreciate as an adult and not grow out of for a long time. I know the final product is in my ability to play and I'm sure Wynton Marsalis can make a $99 horn sound like a million bucks.
I want a new horn for under $300 ($120 - 300). Maybe reconditioned professional models only at a good low price ... hehe... No used, since I don't want to spend more money into the restoration of the horn.

P.S. I read this article from a professional trumpet player online that swears that he has a $200 Yamaha student horn and it plays like a champ for him.

I play 5 instruments myself, unfortunately none of them being the trumpet. What I will say is that if you want to learn to play Jazz, learn to play by ear and not by written music. Improvisation comes to you much much easier that way.

I would start out with a cheap instrument and upgrade if it turns out that you're getting serious about it.

Ahhh...the Trumpet...what a wonderful intrument. I've played the Trumpet for ten years now.

I would say go with the Bach Trumpet. If you want to buy cheap, then you'll be getting a crappy Trumpet. Having a good built Trumpet does help with your playing. You can start off with a Bach Gold trumpet, or just buy a silver bach one. I have a silver one.

In terms of mouth pieces, I think when you first buy it, it comes with a 7c mouthpiece. 7c mouthpieces are good for beginners, make sure you get that one. As you get better you can goto a 5c or 3c. The difference in numbers is the size of the mouthpiece hole. The lower the number the bigger the hole.

As for where to buy it, I'll have to look into that.

Buy a Silver Bach Trumpet if you want to spend the money. The 300$ one is a good if you want to spend the money.

Locke I came across this website that appears to have a good deal on a quality horn. Also I like the 12 months interest free with a low monthly payment. It's the Yamaha VTR2335SM. I do like the silver also and I was reading that monel pistons are the way to go if you can afford them.
This horn is right at $1,000 with a mouth piece and case. The Bachs are very nice as well as the name.. hehe... But the Bachs seem to be a bit more pricey for me.. Here is a link to the site. Tell me what you think Locke.

I would also call up music shops in your area -- often prices can differ quite a bit from one shop to the next on musical instruments.

Since your first starting out, you don't need to go with a Bach. When you start getting really serious, and if you wish to continue playing for a while, switch over to a Silver Bach.
