Behold the Legend of Avian.

Long ago, before the coming of the Night Elves, before the corruption of all that followed, the world which we now know was much different. That which we know, was yet to come. There was only a world which was inhabited by deities. Among the many, there was One. One which was known as the Glorious Avian. This One was Power. This One was Right. This One … Was.

As the world changed from what it was at that time, and the emergence of the races began, Avian watched. She watched the mere mortals from on high, above the trees, above the mountains. Of all the races, it was the Night Elves who intrigued her most. Those beings who so carefully took from the earth, and yet gave back unto it the life it provided them. They drew from the earth, and yet did not steal from it. These were the ones Avian would choose. As the Elves encountered the other races, and made alliances with them, so did Avian. Followers from all the favored races came to worship her Greatness. She granted power to the mortals who followed. Men, Dwarves, Elves, and Gnomes alike, She favored those who favored Her. She granted protection to those who protected Her name-sake.

It was for this protection that Avian sacrificed Herself. As She sat overlooking her followers from on high, she heard an outcry to Her Name. She looked down and saw the small vessel, being tossed on the tumultuous sea as a great whirlwind in the waters had ensnared it. This was, and will forever be, the Maelstrom.

Avian flew to the aid of Her faithful. What she did not know, was that the brute power and energy of the spinning tumult would engulf her as well, despite the Greatness within Her. As She flew clear of the eye of the whirling trap, lifting the small ship out of danger, the goddess shrieked out in a painful cry that shattered the skies above. The vessel was dropped into the sea, and the Maelstrom had captured the Magnificent Avian.

For one thousand years, the deity remained trapped within the depths of the Maelstrom, being thrashed about in its torrent. She was torn and tormented by the never-ceasing chaos. As the churning around and about Her continued, the warring within Her began. Not only was the ethereal body of the goddess being blasted unrelentingly, but Her Spirit was being rent in two. Time seemed to have no meaning, only the constant tearing of both mind and body. One extreme warred with the other. Not only Good within Her, but now Chaotic Evil. Each struggled for more power within Her. There was no relenting.

With an earth shattering spasm, the deity was forever split into two. No longer One, the being was Two. The first, only a shadow of the Greatness that once was. Her power so drained and Her Glory so tarnished, She returned to the lands of the races now known as the Alliance.

The second being, only darkness. The essence of this darkness was Evil incarnate. This twisted and chaotic demi-god known only as Naiva, sought out the heart of darkness, among the lands inhabited by the races known now as the Horde.

One day, there will be a reckoning. One day, there will be a rejoining. On that day the followers of Avian, and the disciples of Naiva will clash in an all-consuming fury. The Victor will rise, and the goddess will REIGN SUPREME.

I know nothing about the WoW history or books, etc, but this sounds great.
