Post subject:  D&D: Petition for new Wing

I know that there are a fair few of us who play PnP D&D or one or more of the computer games based on D&D (Baldur's Gate, NWN etc.). There was also an attempt at one point to get an remote "table-top" D&D game going that, unfortunately, never got off the ground.

Given that D&D 4th Edition has now been released and that wizards are creating some very interesting tools to enable remote play, I'd be interested in trying to get a proper game up and running at some point. I also feel that it would be good to have a single location to coordinate and discuss D&D related news.

Therefore I'm requesting the creation of a new Wing for D&D. As is standard rules for this process, we require six people to add there names to this petition. Obviously, mine is an AYE so we only need five more.

AYE!

Are we looking to add a couple of Private forums (Such as, a Discussion forum and a Play forum), and one Public forum, or are we just looking to add a Private area?

Whichever the plan, I vote Aye! (or Yes, for you landlubbers).

I would expect for the moment, just having a public forum. I don't think there's any need for private forums for the moment. But it's something that could be assessed further down the road.

Since opening the forums for the Age of Conan alliance, my brother getting the whole set of 4th Edition rules, and the other D&D discussion that introduced me to OpenRPG, I've been thinking of starting up an online portal for D&D using OpenRPG as the tool, with forums hosted on my site, and possibly a VoiceChat server set up.

Still trying to figure out how I will set it all up, but I'm really interested in getting some virtual Tabletop games going for it.

I suppose having a forum would be good, especially if people have a game going and want to talk about it over the week or whatever. I vote for this too. Don't know how we would work the time zones of the people who have replied to this so far, though...

We can worry about that later! Half the point of the forum is for a central place for all the D&D related news ... The other half is to coordinate play. I'm sure there's probably other applications for the forum too.

I vote yes. And I look forward to being heavily involved in this project. Good job to you X, for taking point on this idea. It's long overdue. Several of us are D&D fans and I'd personally LOVE rolling some dice with my fellow Avians, in whatever form that takes.

Probably pouring over the changes to saving throws in 4th Ed.

editors note: I have never played D&D so have no idea wtf a saving throw is or if its mecahnics have changed

A lot of the mechanics have changed. It is my understanding that most of the Dice rolls have been simplified, and the game has been given more of an MMO feel to it.

As I said in the other thread, I plan to write an review, including what's changed and my opinion on those changes, as soon and we get this wing.

I have been looking through the compendium, not quite sure how it all fits together but I think I have a pretty good idea. I'm not really sure what my graphics specs are so I don't know whether or not I will be able to use the other features when D&D Insider becomes a pay service.
I can make a forum if we really need it, but maybe if X2 would be kind enough to post a review here we could get people interested enough to sign the petition and make it official? It's not that hard to move the threads to a new forum if we need to.

True enough...i'm down with trying some D&D, and it does seem we have a suitable forum already made for it.

Here is a bit of foresight into what it will be like....click here!

So here's where we're at: We have four definite yes's, not sure if Cord's interest is a definite yes and we have a couple of interested parties from the review thread.

While I accept that we have the Role-playing forum, I personally think it should be used to retell stories from our adventures rather than using it to coordinate the adventures themselves. But whether we create a new wing or use the Role-playing forum, it would be useful for someone to have Mod access (I'm offering my services here).

I'm hoping that the overview in the review thread will encourage a few more people to be interested. Also in that thread, Onto has offered to DM for us. I'm happy to look around at the various online facilities that exist and see if we can start coordinating a game.

X2, you're a mod for the RP forum now. Let me know if you want any threads moved there.
Obviously the Wizards-made stuff will be the easiest to use online when that comes out, whenever that is. They just scrapped their Gleemax social network in order to focus on D&D Insider and Magic Online, so hopefully things will move a little faster. There is a fairly hefty amount of errata out for the books already too, especially some stuff in the DMG.
Whenever we get started, people who want to play will probably need a player's handbook. Basic rules, equipment, and of course races and classes are in there. Players won't need the monster manual or DMG.

Okay, let's move over this thread, the D&D review thread and the "D&D 4th Edition and NWN2" thread for starters. I'll start creating a organisational thread in the other forum.
