For those of us who may want to dabble in this fully at some point?

Nothing has been confirmed yet but how about we use this thread to nominate and pick a server.

And BTW: how does one dabble fully in something? :P

dab·ble ( P ) Pronunciation Key (dbl)
v. dab·bled, dab·bling, dab·bles
v. tr.
To splash or spatter with or as if with a liquid: “The moon hung over the harbor dabbling the waves with gold” (Katherine Mansfield).

v. intr.
To splash liquid gently and playfully.
To undertake something superficially or without serious intent: “The restaurant business entails more than... dabbling in interior design” (Andy Birsh).
To bob forward and under in shallow water so as to feed off the bottom.

I think this last one really sums it up :P

Why don't you check it out, start one up and post it in the server thread. I will also edit the top thread when you pick one. I just don't want to see our efforts getting too split up.

I'm level 7, and don't worry I'll probably still be level 7 by next week. I won't have much time to play during this week, or next.

My first PVP experience on Shadowmoon

It was kinda like sex: you meet someone, are all excited and then it's over far too quickly :)

I was minding my own business running errands in Elwynn Forest, carrying an invisibilty liquor to help a pair of star-crossed lovers (you know, even Rogues can have a kind heart), when I heard the hue and cry "An undead is at the MacClure Farm", and heard people assemble to hunt him.
That's just where I was headed and from what I had heard he was a skulking type who had sneaked in past the border patrols. "Who better to find a sneak than a Rogue?", I thought to myself. When I got there I looked around for a bit when suddenly an emaciated figure jumped out of nowhere and started whacking at me. For a rogue he was fighting poorly. It was true, I had not seen him, but he did not make use of this advantage by setting up a proper ambush or at least leading in with a backstab. With a few deft strikes I distracted him enough to let loose with a flurry of blows I had practiced so often on Gnolls and Defias bandits. A short moment later a quick slash disembowelled him, splattering his putrid guts all over the grassy ground.

A bit sheepishly I called to the other protectors of Elwynn who were still assembling somewhere that I had killed him, and excused myself for cutting short all their excitement and preparations. They praised my quick work and someone called he would guard the corpse so the fiend would not resurrect and plague the free citizens of Elwynn once more. So I left to deliver the invisiblity liquor, while most of the populace went about their business unknowing what horrors had just been prevented.

Excelent write-up. Were you able to search his corpse for any valuable nick-nacks?

I was not so sure when another player said that he was going to camp the corpse...

Well I suppose that will be the way in PvP when someone ventures that far into enemy territory.

Are there any restrictions on players attacking players. I mean can a lvl 50 attack a lvl 5 player?

No Restriction, but there is the honor point system.

Lose to many honor poitns and NPCs will stop selling to you. Lose some more and they may attack you on site.

The thing I don’t understand is I thought the honor system was there to keep players from killing low level players. But some time this week a dev said the honor system is in game only for killing NPC.

Either they are backing out of their original great idea, or it is not fully implemented.

They are backing out, citing the opportunity for grief such a system could cause. This is the current PVP ruleset:

Tyren wrote:
Here is the current PvP server ruleset:
Dishonorable kills
-You cannot get a dishonorable kill for killing another player.
-You can get a dishonorable kill for killing a lower level NPC.

Honorable kills
-You currently get an honorable kill for killing a similar level NPC.
-In the future, we hope to add to the honorable kill system to provide for PvP rewards. You will be rewarded in some fashion for killing a similar level PC. You will not be rewarded for killing a much lower level PC.

We apologize for previous statements to the contrary. We had planned on a PvP dishonorable kill system, but after basic implementation and analysis, the system was deemed restrictive and took away from the PvP experience, rather than added to it.

In the future, we will provide more widespread announcements regarding any changes made to the PvP system, or any system that affects a large number of players.

Tyren

Regarding PvP punishments-

From personal and professional experience working on games with PvP punishments, while such a system would seem to make it so that PvP occurs only between those players of similar level, historically, it opens up the possibility of exploition of the punishment system more than anything.

PvP zones-

World of Warcraft is separated into 3 different types of areas:
Alliance
Horde
Contested

Only if you are in a Contested or opposing faction area can you be attacked by a member of the opposing faction without your consent. In your own faction area, you must first attack a member of the opposing faction before they can retaliate.

Thus this is a built in safety measure to ensure that lower level players are not being attacked. Once you are into level 20 and up, you will need to head out to Contested territory.

[update]
The misconception here is that a dishonorable kill system would protec new players. It would not, it would discourage PvP fighting and invent new ways to make life miserable for other players.

[Update2]
Taking a step back. The concept of a player dishonorable kill was taken off the table after analysis.

It was mentioned in interviews and in the game manual, but the plan was since changed.

We feel that the honor system that will eclipse the need for a PvP penalty system. If you can get rewards, and rank from killing a similar level character, why waste time killing lower level characters?

I ask that players wait and see what the new system implementation is like before declaring it over. I dare say it will be exciting.
