World of Warcraft Beta Signups This Week!
At 6:00 pm PST on Wednesday, January 28th, the signup period for the World of Warcraft Beta Test will officially begin. We will provide a link to the beta-test application right here in the news section at that time. Testers are not going to be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis, so you will be able to submit an application and receive equal consideration anytime during the signup period, which will end on Wednesday, February 4th at 6:00 pm PST. Please note that multiple submissions from the same household will result in complete disqualification.

For this initial phase of the World of Warcraft beta test, we will only be able to accept applications from Canada, Korea, and the US. The test for Europe and other countries around the world will happen later this year. Please do not contact us for further information regarding the beta test; we will be posting a FAQ in the days ahead.

Lol.

I wish the world of Warcraft appealed to me more. From what I've read on the game development, it looks quite good from a gameplay perspective. I'm constantly changing my mind on the look. Sometimes I think it looks awesome, others kinda lame. It often reminds me of some of the graphics from the "Monkey Island" series.

I really like the style of it. The cities look soooo interesting it's ridiculous. And call me crazy, but I really miss that whole raiding feel that EQ had when I play SWG. Just working together with a large group and taking on massively challenging enemies... it's quite an experience.

I buzzed through some screenies and saw a few you may find interesting:

Alchemy interface (is crafting similar?)

Mining I
Mining II

Mounts I
Mounts II
Mounts III
Mounts IV

Pets

Foraging I
Foraging II

Yeah, again... I love the style.

I'm pretty sure the Gryphons and zeppelins and the like won't be controllable like a mount in the normal sense, but will simply take you from point A to B.

I've been continuing through some WoW archives and as of 1/15:

What are the modes of transportation that are available to each race?
Not limited to the following: (land/air)
  • Human: Horse/Griffin
  • Troll: Undetermined/Wyvern
  • Night Elf: Large Cat/Hippogryph
  • Orc: Wolf/Wyvern
  • Dwarves: Ram/Griffin
  • Undead: Undetermined/Giant Bat
  • Gnome: Undetermined/Griffin
  • Tauren: None: Plainswalk/Wyvern
Further, Warlocks can summon nightmares as their mounts and by spending an undetermined number of skillpoints, a human can ride a Ram instead of a horse.

Yeah...you could say I've just been bitten by the WoW bug...:P

I may be ready for this game as well.

Though I don't think I could possibly play 2 at the same time...We'll have to see though.

Actually that makes it look rather poor and amatuerish.

There has to be a way to make better items that your contemporaries. I guess it comes across as getting a different recipe which will have increased/different stats?

Where's the ability to try and create something new?

Yeah, from reading that it seems all resources of a type are the same and there is no variance in quality anywhere along the line.

Nope... Steel is steel, there isn't any different stats. The crafting professions here are going to be very different from SWG. Pretty much everyone with the skills will make the same items. I'm guessing that Frost Tiger Blade is a Frost Tiger Blade, regardless of who made it and the resources used won't matter.

But the interesting thing is that rare recipes can be found on creatures, from quests, or from random vendors. I read that they will be placing temp vendors at different times where one might find a recipe for a rare item so you could end up being one of a few who have the recipe.

I don't know if I like the idea more then how it works in SWG, but I think it is an interesting idea.

Just in case, but we should all know that this was going to be how things went down from the SWG beta-

I wonder how many "Betas" they'll have... SWG had 4, correct?

Also, does anyone have an estimate for the release date of this baby.

Very True....they aren't good at release dates (I don't even think they state them anymore), but when it goes Gold...it tends to be pretty good.

I'm not really going to worry about the crafting, as I don't know how much I plan on doing it. I'm looking forward to the fighting, raiding, and overall large scale group efforts.

As for release dates, I think there was mention of a summer release (I think it was an article where they interviewed people at Blizzard), but I honestly am guessing a November-ish release.

They've made it pretty clear that this is the World of WARcraft, and that crafting is going to take a backseat. It sounds just like EQs crafting system (or lack thereof). I did like how jeweling was set up. Should be fun.

World of Warcraft Beta Test Signups
The online signup pages for the World of Warcraft Beta Test are now live! Anytime between now and 6:00 pm PST on Wednesday, February 4th, residents of Canada, Korea, and the US can submit their applications for a chance to help test one of the most anticipated massively multiplayer online role-playing games of 2004. Applicants in Korea should sign up at http://www.blizzard.co.kr.

Testers will NOT be selected on a first-come, first-served basis; all applicants will receive equal consideration regardless of when during the signup period their application was submitted. Take time when completing the online forms, and double-check that all the information is correct. We won’t be able to update your application after you submit it, and multiple entries from the same household will result in complete disqualification.

Please do not contact us regarding the status of your application. The beta test will occur in multiple phases; testers selected for the first phase will receive an email within the next several weeks. Those not selected for the first phase might still get in in a later phase. Be sure to check your email regularly during the beta test. For any additional beta-related concerns, please read the World of Warcraft Beta FAQ<< http://www.battle.net/forums/wow/thread ... ost1083003 >>.

Applicants in Canada and the US should click the link below to read the registration information and proceed to the signup pages. To ensure an optimal experience, the beta test for Europe and other countries around the world will take place later this year.

From what they say on the Official Site the main challenge in crafting is getting the resources. After that you are guaranteed an item, there are no critical failures that make you lose the resources, because that's frustrating and plain no fun. And you seem to need some specific resources for a certain recipe.

The better recipes will need resources that are hard to get, e.g. at the bottom of a hard dungeon. So crafting is just another reason to go raiding, there are no main crafters, everyone has to rise in level by fighting.

You know, I think I would rather have them come out right away stating that crafting isn't going to be what it's about, than do what SWG did, and end up being a big let down. The more I hear about WoW, the more I like it.

Server's were very light (at least I was able to buzz through all the signup pages easily) this morning around 5 am. I guess getting up with the baby has another side benefit. :P

I signed up, just to do it. I doubt I'll get in, but you never know. I'd do it primarily to make others at work jealous. I'm not giving up SWG any time soon, though, unless I'm forced to financially (hope not), especially with the cool new changes that seem to be coming down the pipe. I'd only move to WoW if most of Avian did too. I don't want to leave you guys, or vice versa.

Hrmm, I vote that if anyone who doesn't really really want to be in beta gets an e-mail, they should give it to me.

Yes, that's sounds about right.

During a press conference held today, Blizzard Entertainment announced plans to build a local World of Warcraft team in Europe. The team will be responsible for community relations, customer service, and technical support for the game. Additionally, they will manage the distribution and hosting of World of Warcraft on local European servers. With a regional team in place, Blizzard intends to affirm its commitment to the European game community by delivering a massively-multiplayer experience of unparalleled quality.

Based in France, the pan-European team will serve as an integral part of the game’s development process. In this role, they will help manage both text and voice localization, assist in the synchronization of development schedules, and communicate player feedback directly to the World of Warcraft development team. Furthermore, having a team located in Europe will provide gamers with faster response times, direct game master (GM) support, and personal communication with local call-center representatives dedicated to helping players with questions regarding gameplay and/or technical issues in their native languages.

“The European gaming community is very important to us,” stated Mike Morhaime, president and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. “With a dedicated World of Warcraft team in Europe, we can provide players with an extraordinary level of customer service and community support.”

As further example of its commitment to gamers in Europe, Blizzard intends to make World of Warcraft available in French and German, as well as English. Further details regarding additional possible languages will be announced in the months ahead. Furthermore, Blizzard plans to release a beta version of World of Warcraft in Europe shortly following the North American beta test.

Building on the success of the Warcraft® series, Blizzard hopes to expand the MMORPG genre by creating a deep, immersive, user-friendly experience that will appeal to both veteran gamers and casual players alike. World of Warcraft takes place three years following the aftermath of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throneä, when a great tension has settled over the ravaged world of Azeroth. As the various races begin to rebuild their shattered kingdoms, new threats, both ancient and terrifying, have arisen to plague the world once again. Players must explore the lands of Azeroth, forge fellowships with other players, and build their strength in order to prevail.

Good news :!

I have been spending all my time recently enveloped(sp?) in WoW. I am really looking forward to it, kinda like I was with SWG, funny how that works.

I am awaiting a Beta spot and have hopes to be a Dwarven Hunter with Mining as my Tradeskill.

In many ways this game is more simple than SWG..... EVERYONE will need to fight.... and some guys will be able to make things + fight, others may gather things + fight.

The items will not be as varied as SWG where BoB makes High Quality Armor of the exact same type, and Steve makes low quality Armor of the exact same type. Each item of the same name is the same quality.... What you make depends on what recipe you can get hold of. Recipe items, and loot will be varied in a Diablo II kind of way.

To me, this sounds like more of a relief. Less complication, easier fun. Some players may not like this simplicity, but I think I will for a change. The Developers are not trying to make a full fledged player economy, they are not trying to make players full fledge crafters… so variety in the same exact item will be nonexistent. If you want to make something different, you will need a different recipe.

Crafters will need to explore and fight to get components. I look forward to being more of a fighter, with some support talents on the side to help provide for my community.
