Like most things Blizzard, they give no definitive timeframe. And in this case, that's a good thing! :P

I applied, but, I'm sure I will not get in. Why? Well, I have a little dinky, 400mhz laptop that I use upstairs for browsing the web and such while the kids are up and active. So, that's where I applied from .. and it took my system stats from the laptop. I kept trying to remember to "re-apply" from my game computer but just kept forgetting. I wish there were some way to update my application with correct cpu stats.

looks like another EQ style Hack-n-Slash.

Grind or no grind I might still stick with SWG for the time. I think what I like most is the fact that I can mold my character any way I want in SWG rather than teh Class system of the others.

Don't I know it, Golga!

I am, however, having a blast with my 39 Orc Shaman, rOC! :P

**EDIT**

Just to clarify, I was being facetious above, suggesting I had played the 'leaked' version to the point of having a leveled character. I am not yet in WoW beta :( In fact, no beta emails have been sent according to Blizzard staff.

Frasier wrote:

Heh, this is one of the reasons I like and respect Blizzard, if they're not ready, that's what they'll tell you and they won't even string you along with promises of 'soon' or 'hopefully next week.'

Earlier in this thread, there was brief mention of system specs. These are not necessarily for the game but they are system requirements for Beta. Not sure why I didn't see this before.

My current bible: www.blizzard.com/wow wrote:
The World of Warcraft® Beta test has the following requirements:

• A 56K or higher modem with an internet connection.

Windows® System/OS:

• 800 Mhz or higher CPU.
• 256 Megabytes or more of RAM.
• Geforce 2 Graphics Card or better.
• 3 Gigabytes or more of available hard drive space.
• DirectX® 9.0 or above.

Mac® System/OS:

• 1.0 GHz or higher, G4 or G5 processor.
• 512 Megabytes RAM or higher. DDR RAM recommended.
• ATI or NVIDIA video hardware with 64 MB VRAM or more.
• 3 Gigabytes or more of available hard drive space.
• MacOS X 10.3 ("Panther") or better

EDITED my post a little ways up. Take a look for clarification on my WoW beta status.

Okay, I don't know about you all, but I'm super excited about the loot system that is described briefly from this chat transcript.
Quote:
[GilS.PR] Can you give any comparisions, or lack of, between the drop system in World of Warcraft and Diablo 2?

[Katricia] Like D2, WoW supports a form of random item generation.
[Katricia] Unique items can be created by the system such as "Sword of Lifestealing" or "Breastplate of Stamina" ...
[Katricia] We take the base item like the sword and the system randomly combines it with a modifier such as lifestealing
I just loved the D2 loot system. There's just sooooooo many possibilities for items, and it also makes loot drops occur a lot more. It also allows you to get really creative with the items you use at your disposal, like maybe outfitting yourself with lifestealing gear, or maybe you like some cold dmg + extra defence (just making up random possibilities).

It's one of the things that bothered me about EQ. All the loot was the same, and most of it was found in the exact same places off of the exact same mobs in the exact same positions all the time. And because of this, it was exceedingly rare to get the good stuff, and also it was nearly impossible to have a unique gear template (casters especially). I dunno, just wanted to point that out.

They've updated the FAQ.

Interesting bit regarding beta:

Maybe I was just out of the loop but that's a bit of a surprise to me. In any case, it's cool we'll be able to get access to a lot more screenies during Beta. :P

And BTW: Whoaaaa...

What does that mean??

I can't seem to locate the Blizzard post that gave just a little more detail about this but the general idea behind this is while you can drag and resize the chat and combat windows, everything else is pretty static. However, using XML and one other language/query that I did not recognize (could be internal to Blizzard), users would be able to use their own colors and images to create a 'guild skin' GUI that could be shared amongst a guild. Or you can just rearrange the components already on the screen. The limits of that are something I'd really like to explore.

How do you guys think this is sizing up to other MMORPGs? EQ2, ...

I've played Blizzard games for a long time and they seem to hit Home Run's most every time (perhaps a couple triple thrown in there) But Diablo, StarCraft, Diablo 2, Warcraft (may be a triple) are all quality games.

They just need to deal with the cheaters and I think a server based game like WoW might go a long way.

Of the biggies on the horizon right now (MEO, EQ2 and WoW) my money is on WoW. Blizzard designs their games with wanting to play them for hours and hours in mind. In the interviews I've read, they've made it very plain they've already taken steps away from what they originally thought would work once their alpha testing proved it wasn't fun or was just a boring clickfest. Blizzard, unlike SOE, seems to really take tester feedback to heart. In other words, beta testing really, really means something.

They did take tester feedback to heart. Too bad they made the wrong decisions based on it (e.g. no interdependency, no schematic revocation)

Continuing on with what Rocklar said, this UI customization is huge in EQ. Using XML, players can change the look of practically everything. Minor things, such as simply moving windows around and resizing, anyone can do. To see some examples of the variety that can be achieved when players utilize XML, check out some of these screenies for EQ skins:
http://www.eqinterface.com/sdownload/picture.php?s=&id=538
http://www.eqinterface.com/sdownload/picture.php?s=&id=1881
http://www.eqinterface.com/sdownload/picture.php?s=&id=2378
http://www.eqinterface.com/sdownload/picture.php?s=&id=2268
http://www.eqinterface.com/sdownload/picture.php?s=&id=1249
http://www.eqinterface.com/sdownload/picture.php?s=&id=2587
http://www.eqinterface.com/sdownload/picture.php?s=&id=2589 (I used something like this one with my druid)

So really, the possibilities are pretty limitless. It all depends on if WoW will allow this much customization. One thing that custom gui makers did was to show percentages for hp, xp, etc (as there aren't number values like in SWG). This eventually got implemented into the official default UI.

And I would say my money is on WoW, but it's also really just the one I want to play. I just really love what I've seen so far, and Warcraft is just great, and Blizzard is great... it's totally grabbed my interest. Btw, anyone else have thoughts on the loot system? Or am I the only one excited by it? :P

Nope, you're not alone! I love that everyone who grabbed the mission gets the mission loot! I like the options for looting (round-robin, leader, etc) and the way the unique items are generated (ala Diablo).

Yeah, I feel the Diablo-ish loot is missing form SWG.

At release the SWG missions were really boring. They are improving, but I think Holo did his damage to swg when he had the bright idea that players did not want cool loot.

As a player I want rewards at the end of “hard” quests. So far SWG has very few hard quests, and all to offer the rewards found at the end are really embarrassing. Sure the experience in itself is a good reward… but a sock hat from Jabbas palace is …well… dumb.

The new rewards in the theme parks are a good step forward, but WoW can do themselves very good if they bypass the 6 month learning curve SWG had and go right into what blizzard is known for… Godlike Loot!
