I just got swept up in the WoW hype over the last few weeks. So there was a time I was wondering what WoW did better than SWG, and what WoW did worse. I have a feeling many in our Avian community are wondering the same thing. So in an effort to give you a true vision of WoW, I present this thread.

It is my hope that WoW enthusiast and cynics alike post information stating where areas of WoW are not as great as the way they were handled in SWG. Some of us may disagree here and there... that is because much of this stuff is subjective… not to mention many of us are still do not have our hands on WoW to try things out first hand. But by presenting this information here, we can help give the Avian Community a realistic vision of what to expect on WoW.

I do not want anyone to jump games and come back saying no one told them of areas SWG was better than WoW.

Well one that is easy is trading. The bazaar/vendor system in SWG is great, you don't have to sit there and can even go offline.

WoW- you shout a bunch in the trade channel, if you see something you want to buy you have to stop adventuring and run back to the city to directly trade with the seller whereever they might be.

Another is the waypoint system in SWG. Currently, you CAN'T mark on your map locations you'd like to visit or return to later.

Also there is no /find command in WoW either. You'll have to either know where a trainer or building is or end up asking everyone around you/checking webpages.

Few of my "yuck" factors towards WoW right now.

First thing I can think of is the Character Creation/customization system. No matter how much SWG may have failed you, you have to admit that SWG made a awesome Character Creation/customization system. I really think for years no one will come close to toughing SWG in this area.

From what I have read, WoW is improving the existing Beta Character creation system… but what they have now is not anywhere close to what SWG did. Maybe the other WoW fans can bring in details of how the WoW system works… but it is my understanding that you choose from a pallet of existing faces. To me the SWG way is much better in that regard.

WoW will also not have any height or weight adjustments. This does nto bother me much, but some of you may not like that. To me the face thing is more troublesome.

However, on the bright side, SWG has major database issues… most of which are attributed to items in the world… but they do talk about how enormous the data is for each characters look… Maybe WoW’s more primitive character customization will not have the database issues SWG suffers from.

Anyway, do not expect WoW’s character customization to be better than SWG.

I have heard of the same things Warnel reported. And I have to agree with them as being less than SWG.

I hear the trading system is being worked on, and rumor has it that it will have some kind of auction system along with other improvements... but only time will tell. I have a feeling commerce will not be the same for WoW as it is in SWG. I think it will not be as big a factor in WoW as it is in SWG.

The SWG waypoint system will be greatly missed. That is an area of SWG greatness that I think is often overlooked. There is talk of possible changes to this in WoW, but I am not sure if we will see anything out of it.

WoW announced a few areas where you no longer need to visit a trainer... that, I think, was an attempt to pacify the looking for trainer problems... but Warnel is right, /find in SWG was a great detail.

I can't find much infomation about WoW's camera, but the camera controls are one of the best things about SWG also. Really going to miss it because I think WoW's will be more restricting.

I use the mouse mainly to change my view (scroll in and out with the mouse wheel, rotate up/down/around by moving the mouse). Can get a 360 view around your character in WoW? Does it have a 1st person view also?

I am very impressed with the camera control of SWG. I have yet to see anything in gaming that feels so natural to me.

I think Yes to both first person and 360 view.... but it is all based 3rd hand information.

I read that you have to hold something like shift to view yourself from the front and at different angles. I am not positive that the key is shift.. but the point is you hold a button and then move the camera perspective with the mouse to get different views.

As to first person, I read where a tester told another tester to go into fist person to fix a glitch... I assume from his statement that there is a first person view.

Rocky may know for sure.

I really like the ease of use for movement in SWG. Using the mouse to control your character was a stroke of genious on the part of the SWG devs, and really made the game accessible for the non-gamer crowd.

I used to use WASD controls for most games I've played, but I've really gotten out of the habbit from playing SWG. I am not looking forward to relearning my dextrous WASD abilities if WoW doesn't have a mouse movement funciton.

Mouse movement was one of the BIG war horses in early Beta, some of us loved, some said it was the worst thing ever.

But, the strength of SWG allowing multiple control patterns and custom key mapping won out.

That is a really good thing.

You can move in WoW using just the mouse.

I haven't seen a lot of video stuff on WoW, but the motion capping for SWG is simply amazing, and is far better than any other game I've ever played. That is another area that SWG has really excelled.

You forgot the one big thing SWG has that WOW won't... me! :lol:

I have no interest in playing WOW. I played UO for 5 years, I tend to stick with a game for a while. Besides, I am still curious to see how SWG will evolve over the next couple of years.

<<I never got bored of the voices in Kotor. They were the same couple of voice clips for the aliens that didn't really match what they were saying (they would speak 1 of about 3 or 4 phases in Rodian no matter what they were talking about). And that seemed to add very nice "feel" to the whole setting.>>

I agree, the KotOR aliens were kinda cool, and it rarely bothered me that every alien language had like 3 or 4 sentences. Part of the appeal was though that you did not understand what was being said, and you had to read subtitles, like in Star Wars.

In an understandable language where you don't have differing subtitles to keep you occupied it would have gotten old rather quickly.

I once worked on a CRPG where we had like 50 different soundbites for NPC comments and by the end of the game you knew them so well...

I still disagree. Ever play either of the Diabo games? The NPC's speak there also, in english. "Can't a fella drink in peace?" still cracks me up today thinking about it. :) Or even any of the Blizzard games... WarCraft/StarCraft. The units give short lines but still, hearing them added to the effect.
