It seems the Droid Invasion of Naboo raised some eyebrows and was generally considered to be a good thing.

Have a read of this article about Stitches, an NPC Elite mob that terrorizes a town on a regular basis. It seems the "NPC Invasion" type thing is stock and trade in WoW. This is a good thing!

Has anyone heard of these types of invasions happening in other locations in WoW?

Neat. I used to love invasions in the mud I used to play (haha I know). Goblin hordes, rogue witches, and the worst one was when some giants came to town... killed everyone in the area with one step! Those were the days.

So far everyone reports that Stitches thing and every is happy about it.

It seems there is only Stitches in the game right now, but from the feedback from the testers I hope they do something similar elsewhere (though not so often that Stitches stops being special).
