So, my university's intranet keeps me behind a firewall. So I'm trying to download the beta, but it's going excessively slow. Is there anyway to get around this? I have my own personal firewall, but even when I drop it it's still slow. Any ideas?

Sadly the answer is no. Blizz keeps saying they are considering other ways to download patches etc. but they may not be available until after the game goes live.

Might try another gaming file server? Pulling it from fileplanet myself.

I'm in. But I'm having trouble as well. Fileplanet is what I'm using and I'm waiting in line forever and then it fails to download. Can somebody link me to another source?

Is this much faster? There is no way I should be getting at most 40kb/sec on my connection. Very frustrating.

I imagine there will be quite a patch come release, coupled with a huge demand, could create quite an issue.

it SAYS i'm getting 230kbps but it doesn't show any progress or an estimate of when it will be done. I dunno. we'll see if it even works.

If you're downloading from FilePlanet, I strongly recommend using their download manager. In order to use it, you have to use IE but it's worth it, believe me.

When I was in a hotel last week and it was looking like I wouldn't be getting the WoW client until I got back home, I figured I'd try their DL manager and it made a world of difference; granted, it took 10 hours but still...I got it. If your DL stops for some reason, the monitor will tell you to hit F5 and the DL will continue right where it left off (you just need to point it to the same directory you selected when you started the download). It's not often that I have a real use for IE :P but that was one of them!

D/ling from fileplanet I get generally 300-400 kbps. Took me like 2 hours to get the 2.5 gb client.

Actually, I found the source of my woes. I've got what they call a "flapper." (don't tell anybody).

My cable modem keeps going on and off every once in a while. This is due, they think, to some jackass that ran my cable drop when they installed it a year or so ago. Instead of running it to the D-Mark, he split it off another run. Apparently I'm losing too much of the signal because of this. That make sense?

I have exactly the same problem with my home cable, which is one of the main reasons I use DSL. If they don't run dedicated cables to each demarcation point then the signal gets progressively weaker. This is kind of like packet loss, as evidenced by my digital cable's desire to come in like a horribly pixilated picture on some stations.

My problem is that it's the wiring in my house causing a large part of the problem, and not my cable company. (Although I suspect they could deliver a much better signal too)

That is exactly what mine does - the horribly pixalation on some stations. The great thing is, I didn't even know this was something that they'd fix until some cable guy came by the house without me calling them and said they'd been monitoring the activity levels of the modems and stuff and mine was flapping real bad. So they ran a dedicated line to my house, and then they are coming back out Thursday to re-run the line in my attic to the modem. AND they're doing it for free. That pretty much kicks butt right there.

But that still leaves a problem of not being able to get the friggin download until Thursday.

Yeah, that's bad signal. Most cable companies are dumbasses and don't do things correctly. At this point, I'm still sold on satellite TV. I do have cable internet, though, but since it is the only active cable line in my house, I don't have a problem.

By any chance do either of you have TWC for your cable company?

They'll have to run dedicated lines to your equipment to help correct the problem. See if they can put a mini-amp on your lines. Also, if you decide to get crazy and do it yourself, you'll want to use RJ-45 quad, or it might be RJ-46 quad. I forget the specific designation. You usually can't pick that up at local retailers like Wal-mart and Radio Shack. Its expensive.

I'd offer to send you the file via instant messengers, but that would take even longer.

Well it sped up quite a bit, and I've been constant around 40 kb/s. It's been 18 hours and I'm 94%. I'll be on tonight.

I called home from work and got my wife to download the Blizzard thing from the site. She said it's running at crazy fast speed. So maybe I can get in tonight too. That'd be nice, but I'm not holding my breath.

And to answer your question Cet, yeah, it's TWC.

ok, just got home and the speed has apparently leveled out. Looks like I won't be in until morning probably. 13 or 14 hours is the prediction. At least with this Blizzard Downloader I can see some progress.

First I must applaud your wife for being able to go on and start the download.

Second, how the heck are you getting crazy speed? I can't beleive I'm running at 10% of my d/l capacity????

Third, no TWC in Canada. (I think, what does it stand for?)

Golga I'm also getting really crummy rates with the Blizzard downloader(about 10kb/s average) even though I have DSL, I've opened all the needed ports, and disabled my firewall. I've gotten to 30%. Started about 9pm last night. I'm going to cancel and try the fileplanet download. Cause right now it's going to take me 2 more days but with fileplanet I might be able to get it in 10 hours

Part of the problem with download speeds could also be at the source, with everyone trying to download the damn thing, and only limited upload bandwidth available, even with Blizzard using the bittorrent client to download it.

And Talon, I feel your pain. I still do support for TWC in NYC, and I think I can safely say that TWC is in the top two worst cable companies in the world. I'm not sure who they are neck and neck with, but I'm sure there is someone out there that is equally stupid, hateful, greedy, and unreliable.
