Critical Acclaim for World of Warcraft!
While we feel fortunate that World of Warcraft has proven to be popular in retail stores nationwide, we're especially proud of the positive reviews the game has received thus far. To date, the critics have been unanimous in awarding World of Warcraft with top scores, including an Editors' Choice Award from GameSpot. Click on the links below to view some of World of Warcraft's first reviews. We'll add links to more as they come in.

Gamespot: 9.5/10
Yahoo! Games: 9/10
Telefragged: 92%
Game Arena: 10/10
My Gamer: 9/10

That is a pretty good report card. SWG did not have near the positive reviews, most said they could not rate SWG until the MMO was around more time... and that it was common to do so because MMOs are not finished upon release.

Who said all MMOs start out sucking? WoW seems to be bucking the trend!

WoW will definitely continue to remain cool, because Blizzard has a tremendous amount of things in store for the game, patches with new stuff, and expansions. We still have weather, alot of pvp stuff, houses, new areas, and lots of other cool stuff that will make its way into the game over the next coming months.

WoW has an advantage in that it does not have to fix a truck load of broken crap. They started out with just about all thinks working as intended. SWG started out with lots of broken and unfinished ideas.... still today they have not fixed all the broken day one issues. Let alone the new game breaking one they added as “don’t quit carrots”.

WoW does not have that problem, so Blizzard can focus on improving and adding instead of putting a band aids on a severed limb.

One other thing, WoW does not have 5 movies, 100+ books and a ton of games to live up to in terms of "feel" of the universe, expectations of what can be done and who can do them.

I mentioned this long before I was even in WoW beta. Bliz owns WarCraft soup to nuts and can decide what aspects of the universe to focus on and what parts need to be modified a bit in the interest of gameplay. Because of this, Bliz was (and continues to be) in a much better position as far as content production (just as SOE was with EQ2). The content, lore and themes they have to live up to are already their own creation and they maintain complete creative control throughout the process of developing the MMO. Result: a more cohesive experience for the user.

Well, SWG was a bit hampered by the "sandbox" approach all through early development.
WoW has been tightly focused (with the focus on fun and a "casual" game experience) and it shows. The WoW lead designer admitted that they have neglected the "world as toy" aspect of MMOGs and we can expect some development there some time in the near future.

I understand your point but I still believe people would be clamoring to be a Jedi and screaming for Mandalorian armor and yelling for an accurate version of a TIE fighter regardless of whether they were running missions or operating their own little galactic financial empire/smuggling gang/cantina act.

Which is in crass contrast to the "feel" of the universe, but I agree people will want to get iconic equipment for their chars.
