Don't know if any of our other mages PvP much... but after this new patch, I seem to die really really fast... wondering if anyone has any good Strategies for PvPing Mage style? I got to admit, I lose just about every one of my one on one battles... and even when think I am going to win, some other happy hordy shows up and ends it (had a couple one on ones with droods... those seem to work the best for me)...

My Strat pretty much consists of hiding out with some other allinace, and trying to get a couple of long range fireballs off...

I got Manni up to Knight once... as a Fire Mage...

I was a suicide bomber basically... I would wait for a large fight to break out, then blink in and unload AOE style.. mass carnage would ensue. I died alot, but I took a TON of folks with me...

Or I would try to hide and pick off folks that others were fighting...

Dying is much faster now that damage has ramped up by HP's haven't really.

Deak and Manni can speak much better about this than I but I'll give you the opposition perspective.

Tauren Feral Druids have 3 stuns and a ranged interrupt. They have huge HP and heals, ranged spells and DOTs. The latest patch has done a lot to streamline our PVP talents. Mages were always one of the "easier" classes for us to deal with but I think it's a bit easier now.

Save your burst damage spells for when the druid is not in bear form. A well geared druid might have 8k+ hp while in bear. As soon as the druid comes out of bear or cat, then CS him. Otherwise, kite as well as you can. Force him to change shapes as often as possible and burn mana.

Sad to say that the mage class might be left feeling kinda diminished or unbalanced at this point (PvE or PvP). Frost Mage might be the only talent set that has any defenses.

I'm feeling kinda curious as to the role of the mage inside WOW. I thought they were suppose to be the DPS champs (along with rogues). I imagine their dps base is probably the best (meaning not so gear dependant, but gear certainly makes other classes perform well). Warlocks seem to be out dpsing the mages in raids and they still have their tanks available and ways to siphon life and restore mana. just not sure where the balance is set.

We have the +int buff and the ability to remove curses, plus spell damage (probably one of the easier classes to play) and AoE...i guess AoE is our claimed right?

Joe, AoE is getting nerfed in the near future... HAHAHA !!!!

Actually, Mages can still do quite a bit of damage, I stay around 5 or 6 in our raids in overall Total Damage. DPS is a crap stat. Total damage is what I watch.

PVP mages have some challenges to be sure... but I quit worrying about PVP.. too many asshats to worry about.

I enjoy my mage, and still think he is a good character to have on raids... but every mage I know does have a case of Warlock envy.. sometimes their numbers are just retarded...

I have found AB to be pretty tough... I think do the the smaller size then AV, I get targeted pretty quick... Horde defiently seem to take out mages faster then any other squishy (makes sense), but in AV I have found I can still hang back and kill from afar.

So I guess I just need to work on my 1v1, 2v2, etc.

Remember to use all your abilities to your advantage. Mages easily turn 2-on1 situations to a 1-on-1 via Poly. And if you find a node protected by only one person you can always Poly and cap the flag.

A lot of PvP also depends on your gears. If you are undergeared, you are likely going to lose 1-on-1 versus most classes. I don't have a level 60 mage so I can't give you much tips, but from a warrior POV mages are the deadly class to fight 1-on-1 even if I out-gear them. If the warrior gets a charge off, then poly him, back up to max range and unload as much damage on him as you can (hopefully killing him before he gets in range again). If he uses Intercept, then Blink away, and try to save your Blink for that Intercept. If he has already burned Intercept and somehow gets in range again, then proceed to Freeze him, get out of melee range and kill him off.

The only other tip I can give you is if you suspect a rogue is nearby, use AE to try and bring him out. If a good rogue gets a jump on you, you're pretty much dead.

Oh yes... I Neleyna... you damn Warlocks simply own me... I don't have a Warlock, but I know that Fear, Curse, Curse, Curse, and damn pet up my butt... yeah... I hate Warlocks! lol

If I am lucky to get the jump on a Warlock, I may be able to 2-3 shot them, maybe, that is the only resounding thing about you guys, you die almost as fast as me!

Yeah, I try and work Sheep in as much as I can... but it takes forever to cast... and usually by time I am just about to cast it, someone has already interuppted me... it really only works as an opening. If I am in a large group, and I am hanging back... you better believe someone is getting chain sheeped on the other side though!!! Isn't being chained sheeped just damn annoying!! lol

And just to be clear, I am defiently not complaining here... I love being a Mage, and do enjoy PvP (the best is when I am hiding, and nuke someone with a Fireball... and I see them stop what they are doing, and start trying to find me, but by then the next Fireball is on the way, and I am about to blink to them for the KO), just trying to find some ways to live a second or two longer!

Yeah, any good PvPer will see you casting sheep and interrupt right away. Still worth trying, and it only gets your Arcane spells locked. :P

If you want to stay alive longer than you need to go Ice. Plus, since the mage revision there is much better damage in that tree too.

Oh yeah, One more thing, learn to use blink.

I hate mages who dissapear from my stunlock by using blink, but it works so well

Yeah... I have found Blink to be a great thing, for not only escaping... but for going offensive when fighting Hunters, and for popping in for some real quick DPS to KO someone.

I tried Ice...but alas, I have always been a fire mage, I think I always will... I get to much joy in watching a crit hit and ignite firing off, always makes me smile when I light someone on fire : )

is that more fun than watching them creep at you at half their speed or being trapped in a block of ice? you can get out of range of casters and i imagine melee classes really hate being slowed/locked down.

Though the arcane slow skill should be very nice in pvp.

When I PvP, I put the Rank 1 Frostbolt on my Action Bar, that is what I use for slowing (1 Sec cast time vs 2.5 sec for the higher Rank I think), and depending on the situation I open with it a fair amount (great for hitting the melee class). Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with Ice... but pretty much all thru leveling I was Fire, and right now some of my gear is definetly Fire Gear (Eye of Flame, Mageflame Cloak).

I've been reading a lot about Arcane on the main boards. Many swear it is THE PVP tree.

The new improved Clearcasting talent is sick, add to that AP and a good trinket and you can kill just about anyone with a good dose of Arcane Missles.

A lot also say that slow is pretty powerful, though it can be dispelled/cleasened.

Deep arcane is a 3 minute mage of doom PVP build.

You can do SICK damage.

For a fire mage:
1) Range
2) PvP gear (reducing blink by 2 seconds is HUGE)
3) Improved Counterspell (only at the cost of DPS for now)

and as always - die with honor spamming AoE

Yes, I have found my new calling Deak... when things are grim, and I know I am going to die anyways... I blink in, jump around, and AoE... I have actually found I live a little longer this way!!! It seems to surprise people.

Yeah as a PvE speced mage, PvP definitely isn't as much fun as it could be. but, I'll be back to PvE very shortly.

When level 70 come around, I think I may have to seriously think about the PvP fun of this. now what combinations would be good for 2v2, 3v3 amd 5v5?

If mages get invisibility, then we might have some serious potential

All I ever did as a fire mage in PVP was suicide bombing runs or sneaky defense of nodes....

AoE attacks are a HOOT... watch the pandemonium.

Yeah, I am very interested to see how invisiblity works... they have said you stay invisble as long as you are not doing anything hostile I think... I can think of about a million ways to use this... like sneak AoE attacks... or casting Sheep... then going invisible... or about a million other combinations

Invis will only last for like 20 seconds.. the first 8 or so seconds are spent "fading"...

Its pretty weak really.

Dang.
Probably has a long cooldown too.

Still, it might be very good in situational use and if you can use blink with it...can be useful for surprises.

Invis, run into a group, nova, blink out...let a hail of blizzards go off on the poor locked-down fools....muahahahahaha

The biggest use of invis will be for PVP-
seeing those damned rouges when you know they're there stalking you.
Sheeping or nova/blink and flame on! Big change in balance there.
