we need to start a pool on when this game will be shut down...can anyone honestly think it'll be around 2 years from now?

Yes!

So SOE can point to it and say that the game has been played for 5+ years by a thriving community

Hiya Lenny!! (aka stranger)

Good to hear from ya again.

Off topic - how's WoW been treating you? Reading any of our posts on Pirates yet?

Sorry been away. I left wow about 4 or 5 months ago, I just didn't have time to raid. I'm also heading off to college this year (Clemson), and I don't know if can really accommodate gaming yet. As far as up coming games go I've been really interested in the new Warhammer MMO that's coming out. It promises a robust PvP game with fun questing an a rich storyline. It also seems to be alot less hardcore than WoW did.

You'll have all sorts of time for gaming in college. Especially if you go to Clemson. I've been there once before and all I saw was the football stadium, a Subway and cow fields.

I saw the downfall of SWG by the end of Beta, so I was never there for its few short glory days.

Anything else I could say would be just..... well, Image

The comment I am about to make may shock you. It may even upset. Truth however, is an ugly bitch, so here it is.

A few months ago I reactivated my SWG account. For the firs 2 maybe 3 hours I had a great time. I ran through my house. Visited old cities, now grasslands. I sat outside Karen Spaceport and remembered when we would just stand around with our newly trained pets.

After a few hours I felt like I could really get back into the game. I thought, wow this really is a great game. I began to play it. I even debated on purchasing the expansions and giving it a real go.

Around that time they where doing the whole 'demolition' of old houses. The launch of this feature was just days away. The boards where abuzz with the possibilities of all the reclaimed land. The Devs even had this awesome animation that would happen where an Imperial ship would come and 'demo' the house you selected. To ensure everyone got to help 'clean up' they limited the number of houses you could Demo and they even gave awards to people who diligently Demoed there limit of 10 houses a day. It was thought that it would take days maybe a week to demo all the empty houses - which in and of itself is really quite sad. However everyone was excited.

The day came, we all rushed in game and I personally took down 10 houses from old Avian City on Talus. It was very sad but I felt I had to be the one to remove these house. Avian City, was after all, my Old Yeller.

The fact that Old Avian City was so far out and on an all but deserted planet I was sure I would be able to return for many days and personal dismantle the city I was the Mayor of for so long.

Day two rolled around and I returned ingame and rode my land speeder, the slowest yet most 'authentic' of the SWG vehicles out to Avian City. Once my waypoint fell to zero I was dismayed to see every house gone. Someone had beaten me. But with 20-30 house there at a minimum it must have been a small group of traveling Demo players.

I logged onto the SWG boards and read that a glitch in the patch allowed for an exploit that a tiny number of players used to log into each and every galaxy and demo every single building ingame thus allowing these players to collect the huge sums of 'points' to turn in for rewards - and then sell those rewards at massively inflated prices.

I logged out of the game and I have never been back.

What kills me is that those few hours I did play ingame I almost, just almost, had fun...

they are. A Demo'd house gets packed up and put into the owners inventory. You can unpack it anytime.
Same mech they set up for moving your house.

I just have to say, you know the bar is set way too low when the demolition of houses is something that is exciting... even buzzworthy. Just really, really sad.

I guess this is what "new" or "rediscovered" stuff makes to you. You just enjoy it at the beginning. And then, the more you do the exact same thing every day, the less you enjoy it...
