I actually caught number 2 on the final lap and tied him but the placement goes to to the guy who pits more apparently. I saw two ties today and both placed the guy with more pit stops (and likely less time actually spent finishing the race) higher.

This is almost always an overly ambitious driver risk setting. Sure you changed it back after setting insane for qualifying?

We can go over some settings for your next race but when your driver stats are below 30 you use craven as a general rule.
40-49 cautious
50-59 balanced
60-79 audacious
80+ insane.

That would be appropriate for ambition, might even be able to get away with insane though I might wait till 90, but what were your other settings? I've not found specific info even on Green Team but the engine balancing may affect the frequency of blown engines. The overtaking behavior skill level I believe has to match the overtaking behavior setting.

My other settings were Balanced, Balanced, Brave.

Brave was for the Materials, which the Green Team suggests is based on Tuning.

Maybe that was it...but i'm sure there is also a random component.
