We are getting more and more new players by the day so I wanted to post this reminder about learning skills.

The speed that you learn a skill is based on the points you have in the Primary and Secondary skills for whatever you are training plus a bonus for the amount of points you have in learning. These numbers are then used to determine how long it takes to get 1 skill point. The number of total skill points needed is determined by the Level of the skill (I, II, III, IV or V) and the Rank of a given skill.

Example:
Mining skill has a Primary Attribute of Memory and Secondary of Intellegence with a Rank of 1. You can see this my "Get Info" on the left click menu of either the skill book of the Skills window.

So naturally a person with 12 points in Memory and 9 points in Intel will learn a Mining faster than somene with lesser numbers.

The Rank of a skill is fixed. It can also be thought of as a multiplier. A Rank 2 skill takes x2 longer to train (needs twice as many skill points) as a Rank 1 skill. Cruisers for example are a Rank 8 skill (I think) so getting lvl III Cruiser takes 8 times longer than it would take to get Mining III.

If you know your Base attribute you can use the basic Skill Calc I build here
http://nerfshot.com/eve/calc.php

It is great for plotting a stratagy to time to see how long it will take to get from lvl 0 to lvl XX on any skill. Just plot in your BASE points adding +1 for every learning skill you have that effects that attribute. You cannot just use the Ingame Attributes listed onyour character sheet as those numbers automatically include the Learning Skill bonus. So make a note of your base skills via the downloadable XML file to use the calc.

If you know a skill will take 9 hours to train and you only have lvl II in the learning skill for it's primary attribute it may be worth taking the time to get lvl III if not lvl IV for the attribute.

You may only gain a few hours if that but that times adds up quick and there will come a time where you will actually start to loose time if you dont have lvl IV on all learning skills.

for you math folk here is the Math of all the above.

the math of eve.
How to calculate the Skill Points in each skill.
Code:
How many skill points are needed
(((2^((2.5 x LEVEL)-2.5)) x 250) x Rank)

How to calculate your Learning skills

Code:
Primary attribute is Perception, Secondary is Willpower.
With base Perception of 4 and Willpower of 7, Spatial Awareness lv 5, Clarity lv 3, Iron Will lv 5, Focus lv 2, Learning lv 5, and both relevant Basic implants, your attributes would be:
Perception is (4+5+3+3)*(1+(5*0.02) = 16.5
Willpower is (7+5+2+3)*(1+(5*0.02) = 18.72)

Code:
Take the total points devided by Primary and secondary
(TOTAL points)/(primary + (secondary/2))

As a note:

The best way to advance your learning skills is to alternate between memory, int, and learning as you gain skill in them.

First should be memory or learning, second should be learning if you started with memory and memory if you started with learning, third should be intelligence, cycling around until each skill is at the desired level (4 or 5, minimum).

Once that's done, you can either continue working on memory and int in the second tier skills or work on the other first tier attribute skills. This strategy will help you advance those three skills MUCH faster than you would by just going straight up one of the three.
