Figured that since most of the discussion in the other Pirates MMO game thread was about PotBS it deserved its own thread.

I have read a ton about this game. Devlogs and forums posts from peeps that have been following it for years.

Recent announcement: it is not hitting its release date in June, mainly due to them negociating a full distribution deal, not just through online download service Steam.

No new release date set but there was mention of them drastically expanding beta number late June. Then, in the following interview the CEO mentioned that eventually there will be a full open beta near release, which is great for those of us interested and wanting to see first hand how the crafting a port-contention systems work firsthand.

ZOMG!! I've been systematically IGNORING all news of other MMOs out there, so this is the first time I've actually looked at this game (or any other new game for that matter).... and HOLY....!!

I'm stunned... really.

I think it definitely has potential for the Avian trading empire to emerge but release is still a ways out. Looking like Sept/Oct I would think.

I read their forums everyday so can keep y'all updated here.

This isn’t crafting as you may know it from MMOs, where you click buttons to grind out a single worthless dagger. This is production, on a large scale. You’re harvesting tons of sugar, shipping vast loads of lumber across the sea, and trading with European representatives to bring in luxury goods by the crate.

No grinding. Massive scale of production. This has real potential.

Totally Rocky. I can see grand things. Especially if the economy works as planned and ports in contention either have higher/lower goods prices depending .

Could be lots of fun for crafters to build ship compents and the trader/blockade runner types to enter pvp waters to attempt to get great deals in volatile auction houses.

Closer to beta/launch I would hope to open discussion and vote as to which faction Avian should play. Have to learn more about specific mechanics first though.

I dropped off a greeting that included Avian here.

Also, I'm working on a couple of Guild flags. Baseing one off of the name Avian Trading Company, a throwback to our original ATAT tag.

Where's a good place to link the JPEG files off of?

Moge's Nerfshotis an excellent image hosting service (embedded image link with thumb included!).

**EDIT** FLS has setup a site to share player created content including flags, sails and 3D modeled ships. Check it out here.

Cool - Thanks for the info.
FLS asks that you only upload to that flag site after you have first posted your flag up for comment & feedback on the forums flag page.

The more I read the more I'm likeing having 4 different factions with one that works different from the others. Should make this game pretty interesting.

Here's my first shot at an Avian flag. Note the integration of our crafting heritage as well as an 18th century version of our colors. I have some other variations with different logo and color block placement and flag shapes but I'm holding off until I hear some opinions from you guys.

I have some ideas for implementing a diagonal red (upper left to lower right) slash across the flag but so far I can't get away from the jaggies.

Lemme know what you like/don't like.

Oh, and BTW: FLS has a specified pixel size - that's why the image seems a little small.

I noticed the following comment about the colors and while I started with something a bit brighter, FLS strongly recommends using much more muted, earthy colors - fitting for the era.

I rather like it Rocky.

Is there any reason why the vertical line is slight to the left of centre, is it supposed to be unequal left and right?

I'm not convinced by the red slash idea.

Little thought, have you tried the same logo, but larger and centred, with a solid brown (tan, whatever that colour's called!) background?

I should be able to produce that version of the flag pretty easily. One thing I've been thinking about using a multicolor flag is that it might not be authentic for pirates of that era. They wouldn't have the benefit of an entire government's resources behind their efforts to design or produce a flag. Assuming we want to play the part of a pirate, I think we should minimize the complexity of our design. If we want to take the role of privateers (aka government supported pirates), we should be able to go with a little more flamboyant design, assuming our sponsor government is involved with our supplies and gear. I'll put a couple more versions together, multicolor as well as simplistic.

I see the red accents illustrate some transparency in the dominant flag color. I'll fix it but I'm done for a while - gotta get some chores done.

I'm not sure it's the general concensus, but I think doing and Avian version of the logo for the East India Trading Company is just plain wrong! :P
They were kinda ruthless and it would probably present completely the wrong impression!

There was a real Dutch East India Company. Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie in Old Dutch.

I like the general gist of Deak's #1 too. However, I would modify it a bit from the Disney film connection.

First, I prefer the tan as the main background color outside the cross, vs the more gold color.

Second, for the logo how about we use our simple Avian A symbol as in #s 2 and 6, but right smack in the middle. Then depending on if we go pirate (which by the way I am not certain fits into our crafting/trading regime from what I can tell), or the Spanish/French/English we can either put a sword or hammer (like Rocky's) accordingly.

Very nice drafts btw. I think the tan and blue look really sharp together.

It's actually based on the real company, the one which, I believe, was mainly responcible for the British occupation of India (Do a Wikipedia search for the East India Trading Company). Although, after an extensive search, I have found no evidence that they actually used the logo portrayed in the movie.

This and the English company were just two of four East India Companies, operated by different countries. I can't remember to which the other two belonged. Again, it can be found on Wikipedia.
Deak Almar wrote:

This company, despite what it may say on the website, actually has no legal connection to the original company, which was disbanded by the British government in the late 1800s.

My Idea would be something based off of the East Indian trading company in that it would have an A, T, Co. but the divisions could by made by using a hammer, a sword, and something else to illustrate the different functions/professions/occupations of those within Avian and its diversity

I like it Deak!!! #7 FTW.

We could then either put a hammer or sabre underneath depending on our chosen faction.

May have to make the horseshoe bordering the A a bit thinner but that's an easy fix.

Also, can you make it with the blue background in opposite corners? Just to see what it would look like. I preferred the blue background over the black. Keep the black logo tho.

I also like the version with the horseshoe, that's the logo I most identify with Avian. It's also perfectly reasonable to have on a flag/coat of arms:

It's just occured to me, if that's a horseshoe and it's upside down, that's rather bad luck!

Good Point!

I like Rocky's first one w/ just the A and sabre best.

PS. This game can't be as good as it seems, can it?

Post subject:

Pointing down isn't necessarily bad. We just say our culture is one of the (unspecified) ones where it's ok to point it down. 8)
The hammer-A does look cool, it needs to be a touch more imposing maybe. The sabre is a little Saudi Arabian, which is not really a good or bad thing, it fits well. I was thinking about making an A out of sabres and hammers or playing on the skull-and-crossbones with hammers or something, but the first looks a little screwy and the second, upon reflection, is probably something that we want to avoid, as variations on the Jolly Roger are sure to be abundant. Another possibility would be to make a horseshoe-like arc out of two sabres with the A inside, might look interesting. I don't possess the software to make a nice-looking version of that. We want to stick out, so something fairly simple and catchy is good.
I think it would be good to have some sort of stripe pattern, I think the diagonal stripes Rocklar was using are a little more dynamic than the St. George's cross style on Deak's flag, but really anyone works, and the way Deak has made the cross white brings out the A a little bit more.

Anyone tried an A over a vertical hammer or just a capital T, Yankees logo style?

With the recent delay due to getting a solid distributor (sounds like they are going for a big in store blitz instead of just DL) they must be confident they have something special on their hands. Third party write ups are also postive. Ya never know though.

question though with such a huge push for distribution is server stability early on....thing SWG x_x

That's true DF but release won't be for another 3-4 months at least, including an open beta. I would hope they could ensure a smooth launch by having an open beta and stress test.
