Societies are what guilds are called in PotBS. (Reason?)

I was thinking:
Avian Trading Company (favorite)
Scallywags of Avian
Swashbucklers of Avian

of course Scourge of Avian being reused here would relly work nice.

I really like Avian Trading Company, too. The one thing I think should be at least acknowledged is the implication of the name. It sounds British (I suspect that's because of history and Walt Disney). Considering this, do we need to select a nationality (British, French, Spanish, pirate) before we try to pick a name?

Well if we were going for French or Spanish, then the name would probably be in that language!

I agree though, I think we should select a nationality first. I'll set up a poll.

Also to that point, it sounds like we would be choosing Merchant. I'd say nationality and profession might make a sdifference. Though, calling ourselves a trading company and being Naval Officers might make things more fun when pirates think they have a bunch of merchants to contend with

Good point, Joe. History shows that the West Indiaman, a preferred vessel for merchants (also designed and built exclusively for the theater of operations where PotBS takes place), was among the most feared to encounter at sea.

For now Avian Trading is best. I am not 100% up to speed on the game yet so I am not sure what my playstyle will be. More than likely 60% trade 40% combat - like usual.

From what I read you can play up to 3 chars per server per account, but all must be of the same faction, which means conceivably we could all play both trading and military roles. It would then just be a question of who is playing what as their mains.

My hunch would be to have a few people in each profession in the guild to help in all the functionality (escort important shipments [naval officer], cheaper trading [free-trader], and misc escort/deviousness [privateer]).

From the sounds of the crafting system, all one needs to do to craft stuff is to have the appropriate type of plot and ensure it gets the resources it needs.

Therefore it sounds like any profession can craft stuff, but I assume traders would get the most beneficial skills (ie. perhaps cheaper to build a smithy to make cannon balls, lower AH listing fees, etc.) than the other 2 profs.

I do like the Avian Trading name. It could be tweaked slightly depending on faction selected fairly easily. A translation dictionary should work nicely.

I may be wrong, and it hardly matters much, but what I remember from my High School French...

it would be d'Avian.

I dunno - just using a translation page.

Avian Trading Company to French

Société de Commerce d'Avian - http://translation2.paralink.com/

Gopher's right. Few translation pages handle contractions well.

Sorry, I was not implying that the dictionary would be perfect, just meant to give us ideas to tweak the name to fit the nation's flair.

Compañía de Avian doesn't sound too bad. Doesn't explicitly say the trading focus of the guild but also wouldn't preclude our "company"/fleet of SoLs (Ships of he Line for those not fully into Pirates acronyms yet) from sailing dominance.

I haven't had time to check but are there national (think racial traits) differences that would make it advantageous to choose one nationality over another?

Hmm good question. I can't recall if I was reading about profession diffs or if faction differences were included too. May give me something to hunt for at work today. heh

Yes there are racial differences:

British: They have higher health points due to piss-poor weather and a diet consisting of food utterly devoid of flavor.

Spanish: They have the ability to cram twice as many crew members onto one ship.

French: They have an avatar special move, "Twirl of Snobbery" where the avatar disengages from combat with flare, making the opponent feel unworthy to breath the same air with them.

Pirates: They have an economical advantage, due to their obsession with foreign oil. Also, they're completely ignorant of the other 3 races.

Yes I did, although I was thinking( always a bad move on my part)

British: Ability to drink more without getting drunk

Spanish: Combat advantage when fighting natives

French: Would have better luck with the wenches

I chose to ignore it! Was undecided on whether it was a poor joke you quoted or one of your own invention :P

Every company should have a slogan...

How about:

Purveyors of the Best Ships

Purveyors of the Best Supplies

Purveyors of the Best Stuff

Notice a trend? I don't know if this would be allowed by the devs, but it would be mighty fine, IMHO.

BTW, the S-word could be whatever as long as it matches what Avian Trading is all about....

I don't even think we'd have to use the PotBS in the motto. Kinda cheesy imo, just so happened it worked out quite well with our ATAT name in the SWG days.

Even something like:
Avian Trading Company - "Uniting nations, one ship at a time"

I really like "Avian Trading Company"

I also like our original name, "Avian Technology and Trade".

Although the first links back to the period, and the later is perhaps futuristic.
