As a player, you can be a member of one of the four player nations of England, France, Spain, or, considered a "nation" for game play purposes, Pirate.
As far as playable professions goes, as a member of any of the three non-pirate nations you can be a Naval Officer, a Free-Trader (think merchant), or a Privateer (think adventurer). Pirates, on the other hand, can only be pirates.

Naval Officers can climb the ranks of their military to command the biggest ships on the ocean, the dreadnaught-class Ships-Of-The-Line, sporting a compliment of 70+ to 100+ deck guns.
Free-Traders get special abilities in smuggling, improved ship speed and maneuvering, as well as pluses to port faction relations to help facilitate more trading activities.
Privateers are more jacks-of-all-trades and can fill many different roles; taking missions from their European masters, or free-wheeling as opportunists wherever the wind may blow.
And Pirates, well, Pirates do pirate things. They like to attack and sink or capture enemy player ships, get drunk and start bar fights, cat around with loose women, fart while upwind, and create all other manner of mayhem on the high seas.

Bloodloch's full overview HERE. (really good read BTW)

I'm making the grand assumption that as a guild we won't be Pirate...

I think I'd probably go for privateer. It depends on the mechanic though. If we're able to keep ships that we've captured (a la Sid Meier's Pirates!) then that would be great..... I suppose you could also buy ships!

Whichever, I'd definitely go for English!

I'm torn between Naval Officer and Free Trader. I've read a fair bit about each but will probably need to get a feel for each before I decide. Specializing in a class that will allow me to be more effective at sea is a huge attraction but at the same time the in-port and trading related bonuses sound like they could be very lucrative.

Also. We'd have to look at the benefits of having the larger ships (for naval officer) and the fact that they have a reduced life. I'm sure combat won't be fun against them, but you might find other ships that could take them on if better equiped?

The Merchatns might be able to outrun everon if they gain enough movement bonuses. Probably need alot more research to make the determination.

Also, it depends on how many play. If it's just a handfull it might lend itself to more soloing which would be merchant or privateer.

I am presently leaning towards free-trader or privateer based on my limited knowledge of the classes. Will have to read that link you posted Deak.

I voted Privateer though Naval Officer would be ok too.

It's hard to choose anything but English having read so many of the Master and Commander/Haratio Hornblower books.

Naval Officer sounds good to me. But I'm sure I'll have a free-trader alt :)

I'm liking the freetrader image so far, harvesting sugar cane in Barbados, distilling some rum, and running it to Havana or whatever. I'm hoping for Spanish so I can go with a bald swashbuckler with goatee and extravagant moustache. Tor Santos would be the name. I suppose I could also run the dashing but clean-cut Dio St. Fair, English privateer, if that's the way we go.

Only Pirates get to keep and use captured vessels. All others turn ships in for rewards.

I was thinking about having one of each. We can have three characters per server, right?

That's what I hear.

but, each account will only have 10 pieces of land. So, that will be shared for each character.

Lesson learned from SWG I bet.

Does that matter? Crafting is supposed to be cooprative anyway and if you had to log in each of the three characters separately to sort out 30 lots, that could get a bit time consuming when one would much prefer to be blasting pirates out the water!

I prefer the title "Importer/Exporter". So much wiggle room attached to that.
