I voted Spanish as I am hoping to play as a minority (Brits and Pirates should be the largest player base I am guessing) but not such a small force (ie. the French) that we would be too insignificant in the overall world pvp map. Can't have all our towns in contention.

I voted non-Brit assuming we could find it more profitable by not having as much competition, especially if the Spanish on the server turn out to have a dedicated fighting force who will continually need ships/supplies.

I have no idea where it's based or at what time frame, but if it's based in the Caribbean (which is what I'm assuming), the Spanish actually had control of most of the ports.

The game is set in the loosely-termed Caribbean of 1720. Maps I've seen extend from New Orleans and the eastern coast of what is now Florida to the NE corner of South America (it looks like one of the starting areas is in Guyana, not sure what it will be called in-game) and include all of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea proper. This gives players hundreds of islands and a whoooole lot of open water.

As for the timeframe, I've read more than once that they intended to remain as true to historical details as fun would allow. It seems they chose to include/allow some ships that weren't in use during that time.

You are correct on the timeline, which means that at the start (before towns turn from points of contention, there will big many Spanish settlements.

Polls on the official game forums indicate a fairly lop-sided swing towards Pirates and British.

As I note above, once more official gameplay details come out, we will have a decision to make, which at the rate this poll is going between Brits/Spain.

there are neutral, ports where you can trade with the other factionas, and they can trade with you, so you can sell your goods to them, and they can sell to you things, so competetion would be more of a serverwide thing,
you would just have an advantage on selling in your own towns, cause you won't have to pay as much tax, economy is in connection with pvp, since that would control the ports, and thus the taxes

i know pretty much evrything about PotBS you can without being in the beta :D

I would say we leave this blank for now until more details come out and we get a chance to see the plus and minuses of all factions.
Discussion till that time is always good though.

I want to know if there is a benefit to being in the minority. It was said somewhere on these forums that from a trade perspective it would be nice if we were in the minority … less trade competition. However I wonder if choosing to be in the minority would put us in a position to be greifed at every turn. It would suck if we set up lots in an exotic ports and another faction takes it over constantly.

I read about how the Devs intend to balance the factions by adding NPCs to the minority faction. I guess I want to see it that really works. We all now NPC go down easier than another player. Plus extra NPCs could just be loot fodder for an enemy faction.

I guess I want to see the game handles this potential imbalance.

From the PotBS page on Wikipedia:
Quote:
When the character is first created the player will have to choose a nation to join. This can be any one of either Britain, France, Spain or the Pirates. The choice will be unalterable, but will affect the look and feel of the game more than the actual gameplay. A player is not required to choose the nation that resembles his country of residence.

After a player has chosen a nation, he will be able to customize the looks of his avatar. These will be alterable in-game and do not, therefore, affect gameplay directly. There are thousands of different combinations available to the player, who can freely specify what headgear, footwear, and anything in between, the avatar should wear.

Nations

There are four different nations which the player will be able to join.
  • Britain
  • France
  • Spain
  • The Pirates
They differ only on the following areas:
  • Each of the four nations will have different starting ports, and therefore access to different resources at game start.
  • Each of the four nations will have a unique feel and look as well as unique missions.
  • Players choosing the Pirate nation must choose the Pirate career. Players of the other nations cannot choose this career.

A poll from the dev boards on how the playerbase is split between faction and profession. Not surprising pirate and Brits still lead the way. Spanish and French however are fairly close together.

I chose Spanish but just because I tend to like to go towards the minority. But I am not against the Brits

I like Spanish. I definitely don't want to be Brit, only because everyone else will be. Main reason I don't want to be French I I don't want to have to break out my 'sac le blu' macro every time I get ganked.

I prefer British but I like the underdog PoV.

I think that there's a good chance that the Spanish and French will team up against the Brits just because the numbers are skewed.

Brits being the most populous isn't necessarily as immutable as you make it be. if the brits were underdogs on a particular server, I assume you would welcome that :P

then again who knows how servers are going to break out (multi vs single vs max capacity) I doubt this will be like EVE as the universe/open seas are more granular with the setting of this game.

I hope you mean "sacre bleu!". Either that or my french is more rusty than I thought.

Maybe we should be the Brits and all have macros running around spamming Blue Sacs!! Blue Sacs!!!

Wouldnt it make more sense as Crafters to be in the majority so as to be able to supply the majority with those goods they need without increased taxation and what not? just something to consider

The logic would be to join the one with the fewest crafters to non-crafters. Obviously we won't know which group that is so we'll just have to choose based on our own preferences or some type of educated guess.

Or work the forums for some strong combat guilds and see where they choose to go?

Being on the side that gets their asses handed to them won’t be fun. In this game that equates to loosing ports... and that can’t be fun for crafters on the loosing team. I don’t buy the minority = less competition idea…. Specifically because the minority will loose ports to the Majority.

I bet nationality imbalance will be a problem with this game. I wonder if they will change in over the years to make it more like EVE…. Countries vs. Pirates, and alliances set themselves at peace/war with whomever they please.

Yeah I am wondering a bit about the minority thang after reading the article I posted. If you are on a minority side and never have control of a port you need things could get costly it looks like.

I think the game will tend to balance itself out. Could be a bit optimistic but I still think that if one country become largely dominant, the other two will pair up against it.

I'll have to look for the devlog where I originally read this but a goal they have for the future of PotBS is to have towns with PC governors. Players in that role would have the ability to direct the political relationship their country has with other factions within the sphere of their governorship.

it would be great afcoarse, (but back to the minority thingy) the final port battles are what matters most, a minority(like the horde in WoW) tends to have more targets for pvp practise, more experience, and more teamplay, which they need to defeat thier opponent. so even if they lose by numbers, the port battle eventually comes down to those 25v25, and minorities also have less morons, simply cause theres less people

and i think theres iether a freetrader skill to lower taxes of hostile(ish) ports, or done by reputation to them, there are ways to lower the taxes, cause i read that somewhere, long ago

I'm a bit biased here, but seeing as I am British, I'd rather much like to play British!

In terms of balance though, the GMs are in direct control over allegances and the NPC spawn system. You can guarantee that if players are biased to toward one or other nation, they'll tweak the settings to balance it out with allegances and NPCs.
