Since you can mix classes, similar to DDO, you can basically have a Rogue with Plate, or a Mage with Chain, by taking on the appropriate soul. At least I believe that's how it works. I haven't dabbled outside of the Rogue souls yet.
I think Armor works in the following order Warrior, Cleric, Rogue, Mage - you can wear any armor that falls at your level or below.
Plate - Warrior
Chain - Cleric
Leather - Rogue
Cloth - Mage
You'll notice IG your leather armor says Warrior, Cleric, Rogue on it and Chain says Warrior, Cleric. The main reason I can see is that different stats are emphasised on different armor types - Warrior is strength, endurance, Rogue is Strength Dexterity etc... In a few instances it may make sense for a warrior to wear lower armor if they don't need the protection for the increase in attribute modifiers...
