What things must one consider when choosing a pet?

Is there anything that makes one pet better than another?

As one levels, is there a chance where an early pet will no longer be suitable for the end game?

How do stables work?

How does pet naming work?

Basically you look at 2 things. Attack Speed or Armor. You either need a oet that can tank huge (bears turtles and others) or one that attacks fast (cats).

One Cat may have a slightly higher attack speed or one bear found somewhere specific may have a higher armor than a generic pet

Not that I can see. Pets Level up just like you. There is a Talent that offers +20 health to you each time your pet strikes the target. If you choose this you should go for a fast pet, if not go for a tank pet. That Talent is the last one on the list so it is an 'end game' skill.

Myself and I think Easton both use the pets we started with. I has a raptor for a while but didnt like it. Basically, when you hit lvl 10 train and release a bunch of pets so you can get all the pet skills: Claw, Bite, Growl, Cower.

Then as you level you can find pet that have upgrades to these. Put yout 'main' pet in the stable and train an 'upgrade' pet. Keep it for a few hours until the skills he has you can learn then release it. Claw and Bite are really the two to look for.

You can only have one pet. So place your 'main' pet in a stable allows you to train another pet and learn what skills it has (if any).

Train a Pet, right click in its Icon under your Icon. Select 'name pet'. Pets cannot be renamed so get it right the first time.
You can also see the Pet Details that way which shows you your pets XP and what it eats.

Watchout what you train. If you have a pet that is a picky eater then you could be bumming if you run out of food it likes. My Cat eats meat and fish and I hear Bears eat just about anything. Also, if you pet is level 25 then it will not get much 'happiness' from level 10 food.

Yep, "Pit" is an accidentally accurate name for Deck's bear. They eat anything but they eat a lot (that may be consistent for any pet, it just seemed that way to me).

Moge, I'm currently looking for a new pet. I solo a lot, but don't really have a preference between hard hitting/speedy attacks and heavy armor. I don't really care what my pet looks like either, but one requirement is that it eat fish. I have a spider (my very first pet) that only eats meat, and as he's level 24, its getting very difficult to feed him.

Is there a nice list somewhere on where you can find pets, and how good they are? And also what skills are available to be taught? I've not yet been able to learn any new skills with my spider, as he can't growl. I'll need to do some training and release.

http://www.goodintentionsguild.info

http://www.goodintentionsguild.info/hunters.html <- great list of where to get skills

Growl is by far the most important skill. Spiders can Only Bite I think. I know they cannot Claw (no claws). I like my cat a lot it does good damage and is a decent tank. Now that I have an awesome Bow and Axe I kind wish I went for a Tank Pet (bear turtle and I think Boar) rather than a DPS pet. In the end I think it is all pretty relative though.

talk about a tank. I just used beat Lore on a snapjax Turtle and they have 1800 Armor at lvl 30 and 1100 health. Problem is they only eat Fungus and fruit.

Yeah, the turtles are great tanks... you can get fruit from the fruit vendor in IF... but its gonna cost you... very few fruit drops off of MOBs in the game...

I am still using the bear you get in Darkshore, does the job i wanted him to do so i am cool with him. Holds aggro and stays alive, never did care about his damage output

Does it make sense to have and keep up 2 pets?

Reason I ask is I almost always play as a duo or trio.... so having a tank is not so important. I think I would really like to have a pet that is unique... i.e. one that every other hunter on our server does not run around with.

Yet, I can not deny the need for a good tank when soloing. SO I am wondering how much of a pain would it be to have a cool pet leveled up, as well as a good tank?

Question: are all bears, all wolfs, all cats, all owls the same? Do different versions of the same pet type come into play at all?

Other than appearance and one notable exception, they are all the same MORE OR LESS...

Now when it comes to NAMED animals... they indeed are different... some are exceptionally fast, or have a faster attack rate, etc..

The Hunter Boards on the WOW site have a FAQ with good info and links to more pet info.

It would be possible to keep two pets leveled, probably, but no more than that.

i would agree. when you really break it all down a pet is a pet. You either have a Tank, an attack speed or a middle of the road.
Named pets are out there but I found that those are more l33td00d status symbols than anything else.

The real issue with 2 pets is keeping them both leveled. Having a pet that is your level or just 1 under really is key. The Good news is a pet can only be your level and then does not gain any XP till you level again.
So if you are 33 and you pet is 33 might as well store him till you hit 34 and use that time to train up your alt pet.

Only recently have I even bothered looking at other pets. Im looking at getting a Tank Alt pet.

Where is a good place to get a bear around level 20, maybe up to 24/25?

That's exactly what I do atm. As soon as Chauncey levels with me (or darn near close) a put him in stable and bring out the raptor. But I am serious thinking about going back to Blackfalms Deep to get the elite turtle from there.
