Anybody else played the newest PC version of Axis & Allies? I'm a huge fan of the old board game. I grew up on it.

I got the PC game about 2 weeks ago and started playing it and was immediately disgruntled. It's not anything like the board game, and therefore it sucked. That was my first impression anyway. After I pushed through that immediate reaction and forgot the fact that the makers of the game shamelessly misled us A&A fans, I found that it's actually a decent WWII RTS. It's got some really creative stuff going for it. Graphics are OK, but not great. Some neat effects here and there.

The mechanics are different for this game than what I've seen, which is good. It's been a while since we saw anything new in the RTS world.

Overall, it really is a decent game, but I wish they would have just foregone the A&A label, and called it something else, because the only thing it has in common with A&A is that it's set in the WWII scene.

I love A&A! When I was on tour a few years back we had a running round robin tourny. I still have my board but haven't played it in a while.

I played A&A a good bit back in the day. Still got my board.

I personally liked their Shogun (aka Samurai Swords) game more fun. Man me and buds played that sucker hours on end.

I do have the original A&A game for PC and it is fairly true to the board game. If I recall there are a few rules tweaks so you can tweak to your liking.

Try and find the old one and I think you'll be more than happy.

Yep, played the old one and it was good. Had some bugs that you needed a patch for, but other than that, it was a good representation of the board game. (and man was it easier to set up). :P

My Colonel used to have a mandatory A&A game session once per month. He thought it's teach us strategy, but we though he just wanted to prove how smart he was. :) Probably a little of both, but good memories.

Fun rules to play with are: you can't go to war unless you can name a battle that actually occured in that area with the same combatants and at the same phase of the game.

You sound like a veteran of many years.

Or an amatuer still finding his way. I'd give you some tips, but we each must carve our own path :P

A&A and Shogun were fun games. Played them back in high school with major sessions into the night.

That sucks that the game isn't A&A. I think you should demand your money back.

I'd like to be rich enough to afford two wives, does that count?

The first couple days, I really considered it. BUT like I said, it's actually a pretty good game, if you're in the mood for an RTS.

Talon,

If you want a computer game that is identical to the board game you need the original Axis & Allies PC Game. It even includes the ability to turn on/off the optional starting conditions.

I still play that when I'm bored.

I avoided the most recent version of this game because the reviews of the AI were abysmal.
