I loved these. Good call guys. Even my wife loved them, which is pretty hard to do for scifi-ish stuff.

Same with my wife, got her interested in the show which made her want to see the movie twice in the theater and now we own the Movie and Show DVDs.

One of the things that always bothered me about the show was that while it was stylish, it seemed that hand weapons hadn't advanced as much as one would think over 500 years. Have to call shenanigans on that one.

They're definitely there. Check out ep 11 or 12 (the one where his 'wife' reappears) for evidence of old as well as new energy weapons.

The way I always saw that was energy weapons must have been expensive to buy, operate and maintain. The Serenity crew sometimes had a hard time keep their gas tank full, much less dropping a lot of money on some bling phaser.

Hi-tech guns are always available on the cheap, especially right after wars. Besides Rocky it looks like they are shooting six shooters or something.

So tell me, why does a damned good series get reduced to a discussion on how hot the women are?

Because they're really hot. DUH!

Exactly. Cheap to fill with ammo, easy to maintain, easy to carry. I think the fact that they're not all armed with phasers or similar makes it seem a little more likely. It's always been a big leap of imagination for me to picture how so many people could afford spaceships that are at least dozens of times the size of a normal vehicle. They'd have to cost close to $1M. To that, I don't get the impression that the Serenity is owned but that it's mortgaged (why not - it's a primary residence :P) and borrowed on to the hilt. Trying to make a huge payment on a ship doesn't leave room for buying high-tech weapons that require expensive charge packs and costly and time-consuming maintenance. I would say that Inara is the most well-off person in the show with the possible exception of Simon (but he blew a bunch of money getting River back) and I think she's the only person we've seen armed with their own energy-based weapon.

Heh...arguing whether or not the absence of energy weapons is appropriate or not...the pinnacle of geekdom. I'm so proud!

I need to watch the movie again, but wasn't even the gun that they mounted outside the ship projectile-based?

Just go get yourself an HDTV (or 16:9), then full screen will be normal. :?:

As a bit of a videophile I totally feel for moge and must strongly disagree with this statement. Full screen versions of movies that were shot in 16:9 or 2.35:1 when changed to full screen basically get the sides lopped off to fit the t.v. screen. It is up to an editor to decide what to lose but regardless it is not all of what the director intended you to see. Also when full screen is stretched to widescreen the image is fattened, for instance faces become wider without getting higher.

It's 500 years in the future! Look at how far hand weapons have come in the last 500 years, realize how technological advancement seems to be accelerating, then tell me again why they are shooting these guns. :)

It is for stylization only. I am not saying it's awful just unrealistic when alot of the other "science" seems pretty believable. Even if they didn't use directed energy weapons I would imagine some type of futuristic caseless ammo weapons with extreme capacity magazines.

I was thinking widescreen

I can't stand a stretched screen.

/hence my 60 inch TV is usually just a 48 inch TV

And I won't argue with you on that point, because it really does work. ;)
