Nothing will take the fun out of getting a new job faster than taking the physical for the job and finding out you have Diabetes. Apparently there was a lot of sugar in my urine. Add that I've dropped about 25 pounds recently, I'm thirsty all the time, and frequently wake up in the middle of the night to use the little Smuggler's room... I suppose I should have known. My Grandpa had it, my uncle has it. I guess it's my turn.

Yeah, I know. It's treatable, even when it's bad. That part isn't what is bothering me.

I now have to change my diet completely. No more sodas. Gotta cut way back on the carbs and starches. (No pasta and no potatoes make Angus go something something.) For someone who really enjoys food, this is a huge bummer. I have to completely relearn what I can and can't have if I want to stay healthy and alive.

Dammit.

Not that this compares, but I remember the first time I was told I'd have to take a pill everyday, for the rest of my life. I guess I had felt like I could do anything before that and now I was chained to a pharmacy. I, wrongly, felt so frail at that moment.

You will adapt and this annoyance will fade I'm sure.

I know. It's just a major bummer. I enjoy cooking, and now the things that I really enjoy are going to be pretty much off-limits.

I can handle taking medicine. I can handle the testing and doing injections if I have to. But to tell me I can't have those tasty dishes that aren't good for you but taste really really good??? And I gotta lay off the alcohol, as well????? It's blasphemy!

Don't mind me, I'm having a bit of a pity party.

That's bad news. But, still better to know than to let it go unchecked.

Sorry to hear it bud.

I found out I had it about 5 years ago.

If your doctor tells you to try to manage it through Diet only, and you have a hard time with it, ask him to put you on Glucophage/Metphormin. It really doesn't have any side effects, and it reduces your blood sugar so you can focus on just taking out the really bad foods and the refined sugar, like coke. Diet Coke isn't that bad once you get used to it. ;)

As Golga said, you get to the point that you don't realize your even taking the pills.

Just do yourself a favor and don't let it get to the Insulin Dependent level, cause that's when your health, and your life, really start to become a pain.

Anyway, good luck with it. If you caught it early enough you really are going to be in good shape.

I'll will go ahead and beat you all to it. I am very stupid!

I have been avoiding the doctor for about a year now. I have the same symptoms... I even joke to Danyale about having "Beetes" when I want her to fix me something to drink. It is kind of like I know what the doctor is going to say… so I avoid him. Rationally it makes no sense at all. But what can I say… just speaking the truth.

I guess if Angus is going to go get fixed up, I better look into it too. It might help if I knew the bad stuff that can happen if I keep procrastinating.

I'm not sure of the progression from Type 2 to Type 1 diabetes, especially if untreated, but how does ending up in a coma sound? :)

My sister has Type 1 diabetes (along with a host of other medical conditions). On a couple of occasions her blood sugar levels have been very, very low to the point of being on the brink of slipping into a coma. Scary times when she is delirious, not recognising you and fighting you all the while you are trying to get some sugar into her system.
And doing it in an airport car-park at night (on the verge of getting on a plane out of the country) doesn't help, especially when that vital bag with the medication was accidentally left back at the house.

Doesn't help either when in the emergency room it's nearly impossible for doctors to find a vein in order to put in an IV line for those vital fluids, due to overuse from a lifetime to hospitalisation, thanks to that host of other conditions. And when the only option would to go for a 'deep' line, which would get a bit messy and dangerous considering she is on anti-coagulants.

Count your blessings and go see the doc. :)

I think I'm in an at risk group as well. My aunt has severe diabetes and she's in her 70's now and has managed it for many decades. Medicine has come along way since she was first diagnosed. Angus good luck with this, it'll suck in the beginning, but you'll adapt to your "new normal" and hopefully be able to enjoy the things you do at least occasionally.

I've started to do things differently to ensure I don't slip over into the first stages. 3 basic things I've done:

- Exercising 5 days a week for at least 45 minutes
- Losing weight (I was 223 lbs and am now down to 206-209 with a target of 200)
- Diet. I've cut out all soda except the occasional diet soda. I've cut out 90% of snacks like doritos, etc.

I still have to cut back on the alcohol though. That is a work in progress...

Here's a couple for ya.

Like your kidneys? Want them to keep working? Get checked. If it gets bad enough, they can stop functioning, and you'll have to get a transplant.

Diabetes is not something you want to ignore. It can kill you.

I suggest you do a little internet research on the subject. You'll find out how serious it is.
