Really? Who are you in LOTROland? Im Aranarth as well over there but haven't really posted much on the officials in months, got tired of all the whining and n00bs asking the same questions over and over.

Did you ever spend any time at LOTROsource?

Yeah. Spent a good deal of time there, since the beginning of that site. I know the creators pretty well.

Why?

I played for a solid month last august and september. I still have the client on two of my machines but have absolutely no desire to log on.

Its WOW light in a Middle Earth setting.

Nothing against WOW its just not for me. (WOW or LOTRO)

I havnt really been following this thread, but now that Im at my parents house and found out that both of them have been playing LoTR since before BETA was out I started a character. Currently my character has my parents guild name under it but Ive never even seen these guys (The Old Timers Guild). Right now my Char is a lvl 9 Dwarf guardian named Grailin. I try to get on when I can.

Vanguard looks interesting, but the fact that SOE is producing it makes me cringe. Remember SWG, anyone?

Quick comment that's back off topic :)

Originally it was Microsoft, but the devs (Sigil) and MS went their seperate ways a while back, and that is when SOE stepped in. Now, no one has said why this break happend specifically, but the main rumors surrounding it is MS wanted Sigil to make the game more "WoW-like" and/or have it ready for Christmas. Whether this is true or not, who knows.

SOE is basically just the publisher (printing the disks, maintaining the message boards, etc), not the development team like with SWG. Sigil is made up of the original creators of EQ (pre-SOE takeover) and it was not a happy marriage. So far, Sigil appears to be in full control of the development of the game, which makes sense considering their history. No "wtf, why did they make that change" moments, ala EQ2 beta, etc.

Based upon my experiences, Vanguard is gonna mostly appeal to those who liked the original EQ, as it is a true sequel *in spirit* to that game (or at least EQ and its first 2 expansions) without many of the old/obselete ideas. So far it is on track to fulfilling the fairly ambitious goals Sigil wanted to achive. Not great, but pretty good.

edit:

One thing tho - it requires a good system to play vs. WoW. I swear I hear my ATI9600 card begging me to end its pain.

Played for 30 minutes and logged. Eh *shrugs* reminds me of Guild Wars trying to add WoW's quest engine. Very bery jerky and laggy even on fiber but granted it was on a stress test day. I will try more later.

Dear Cyrus Rex,

Welcome to The Lord of the Rings Online™: Shadows of Angmar™ (LOTRO) Beta Program!

As part of this phase of the Beta Program, we will also be conducting a Stress Test of our account creation website that includes a chance to win an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 graphics card! The Account Creation Stress Test will take place on Tuesday, December 12th between 9pm and 10pm EST.

**IMPORTANT NOTE: Because this event is part of a Stress Test you are likely to experience performance issues including lag, disconnects, slow overall performance, and longer than usual login queues. These issues are an expected part of a Stress Test and provide valuable data to help us improve later versions of the game.

Once the Stress Test is complete you will retain access to the Beta Program and may continue playing the game as normal.

If you are unable to create an account during the stress test, the account creation page will remain open after the test is completed.

I think they know that the beta interest in low. Since when do you have Betas for MMOs offering giveaways just to log into a stress test?

Sorry guys, this one is a miss for me.

The last 3 "events" emails I've received have offered a chance to win a Wii or PS3. Pretty sad. I think this game might be the end of the MMO WoW clones. It seems players are saying a lot by their lack of interest in this once highly anticipated game.

I have been in since the last stress test, played twice, wont be playing again. Just gigs of data taking up space that I am going to get rid of.

I'm sure it won't be a horrible game, even if it is a WoW clone. I wouldn't mind just checking it out though, doing some sightseeing...

Got my invite 3 days ago as well. Can't find the interest to bother installing over the 14-15th.

I see people calling this game a WoW clone..... I don’t see the similarities. I have not been following the game in a while, but when I last looked it was not much like WoW at all.

Did it change?

It reminds me more of guildwars in the look, but the quests and stuff seem more WoW like

I know people dont seem to like the game but honestly it isnt that bad of game, the quests are decent...not great and too much running around, directions are difficult and confusing. It needs touch ups in item/clothing coloring/naming etc... but it really isnt that poor, yes its similar to WOW but personally im not a big fan of WoW, but I liked LOTR a bit...

But it is a bit WoW like in certain aspects like the mines and stuff...

There are similarities and from what I knew of the game a year ago, two years ago, the devs have clearly been influenced by the ginormous popularity of WoW. They've done a great job on appearances and the feel and sound of the world so I think it'll be a great game for the LotR nuts.

As far as the quests go, I feel there are far too many "go here, kill x y's and come back - oh yeah, it's urgent." They couldn't make me interested enough to even read the text of the quest - I'd just skim to learn the requirements and a rough idea of the location.

I agree with what has already been said about poor directions to solve the quest but in some cases, I think that's an immersion technique. When trying to find a particular mob, I found myself really exploring the area and noticing the flair and feel of the area. In short, I kinda liked not knowing the precise coordinates of my goal but would prefer landmark-based directions instead of "east of here" or "go to my right." Those directions are fine if you do the quest immediately but if you break a bit and come back, it can be more than a little confusing as to where you need to go.

Some of the environments are very complicated to navigate and it definitely takes some time to find basic services, such as trainers. I recall Ironforge being a little that way but this is completely different. There are no guards to go to for directions, no signs. I haven't spend a lot of time in that kind of environment so maybe there's something I'm missing or haven't noticed yet.

I'll keep working on the beta, submitting things I find but as of right now, I won't be playing this one unless TBC turns out to be a CU. :P
