Avian Technology & Trade mug

It’s hip to bash SWG these days. Lots of folks like to say that it was a deserted disaster from day one. It’s not true, and here’s some of the evidence. This is a mug from the in-game corporation Avian Technology & Trade which at the height of its powers had a few supply companies, a city (Avian City, natch), and well, real world goods. Alas, just this weekend I saw that there was discussion of Areae on their forums, so I went to check it out, only to see on the front page that they have left SWG for good.

But I still have the mug.

AT&T isn’t dead, of course — they just moved on to WoW...

:D

Lets see here... we sent a bunch of Tshirts, some frisbees, coffee mugs.. coasters... and two GIANT boxes of caffeine sodas (original factory seals and boxes intact so they would actually use it)...

And yeah, they sent us a letter back... wonder where that ever went to... I posted an image of it way back when....

Sweet. We rule. And just for the record, as you can see me, golga and Mole are some of the few who still uses his SWG avatar.

Don't forget your roots.

For your information smarty, I was the first Avian into Roma Victor. :P Though that's something like being the first monkey into outerspace I think.

Yeah we raised something like $400 for the Dev Care Package. Obo gave $100.

I still have the files showing everyone's fund transmission and other files that kept the money straight.

This project and the PA hall effort were my best times in Avian.

Truth Be told, we did the Dev Care Package in or before Beta... When a crafting PA was still a realistic dream.

I have my avatar from SWG but choose to forget that period. Some good times for sure (the PA Hall building, and the unmentionable phiasco thereof, was one of them) but some dark dark times there as well.

Onwards and upwards I say. Shall we make an Avian care it for the WoW devs? Maybe we can get favors to have them drop some legendary items for us.

Don't forget about me. I still have my SWG avatar despite the fact that I regularly play WoW now.

I thought about changing it to my WoW character, but it just wouldn't feel right.

Fun stuff, can't remember if I actually managed to donate, though I think I created a PayPal account with the express purpose of doing so. Funny how thinking back, the wait was more exciting than actually playing the game. Maybe some day our game will come along.

Ok, you may have saved those files, but you obviously lost track of the PM declaring Obo's contribution as Anonimous! Now you've outed the poor guy. How will he ever be able to be seen in public again?

That is very cool - we had a lasting effect!

There have been posts above regarding the fun surrounding the anticipation of the game vs the game itself and I have to say, few games could have lived up to the expectations, hopes and aspirations we had for SWG. It's been easy for me to forget that in hindsight, even while still playing SWG.

Though I'm having a lot of fun playing WoW (though my in-game time has dropped considerably), there is always a little part of me that misses the community feel of Avian City, the sense of accomplishment of working together on a massive project or the reward of accomplishing something cool in just working with a good friend or two. Maybe someday...

Ben Collins (runs the serious games initiative) offered to introduce us to Raph at the Game Developers Conference in a few months. I plan to take him up on the offer... I might have to give him an updated Avian mug, though...
