I'm stuck and hoping you LAN experts can help me out here. I have a LAN setup at my house now. I have 2 copies of Warcraft 3 (albeit 1 is a copy with a no CD hack) and trying to play a multiplayer LAN game. When one person starts a game, the other machine doesn't see it, and I can't figure out why. The LAN is otherwise intact for filesharing and whatnot. Any ideas?

First thing I would do is rule out the LAN, try to ping the other machines on the network, if they are talking then you can rule out the LAN. THe other thing is all the ports open, if you are running some kinda software firewall on the machine (ie Symantec) then turn it off and try. Then I would look at patch levels of the game.

Sounds like the patches are not the same across machines. It could also be because the machines are on different subnets on the network.

After a crash course in everything I'd forgotten about networking, the short version is, I fixed it. The wifey and I were up all night new's years eve bringin' in the new year by slaughtering orcs. Good lord are we geeks or what??!

I had several layers of problems. Firewall software had to be shut down. When I pinged the router, there was no router for some reason. After manually assigning IPs and resetting everything, it all starting working. It was sweet. Only took me 5 hours of pulling my hair out too.

LAN Party in SC!!! When's good for you guys? I have a 5 port router. Beyond that, bring your own. :P

Good to hear Talon.

I was really worried about you. Finally getting a new computer capable of playing games and hitting a network roadblock might have been enough to do you in. I am glad you came out on top.
