- Comp was working last night
- Turned on this morning and I don't get "the beep" which I'm pretty sure means it isn't POSTing.
- I removed the CMOS battery, removed the RAM, put the RAM in the alternate slots, took out the vid card and the NIC...still nothing.

Any suggestions?

I had someone bring me a box a few months back that wasn't getting to POST. Once or twice it managed to boot up, but was mostly dead. After trying everything the only conclusion left was that the mobo got fried somehow, which wasn't an uncommon occurrence for those eMachines boxes apparently.

Try a new CMOS battery, the other might be dead itself.
If you have a spare PSU throw it in.

Does it do anything, like CPU fan spinning at low revs?

thanks for the help Obo...

everything else lights up like a charm... PSU fan works, CPU fan works, the NIC lights start blinking, the HD spins, but no POST beep to start the show...

I called Cyberpower (I'm starting to regret using them) and they issued me an RMA number to ship my comp back (they offered to ship me the mobo and while I've changed out a few I just don't want to deal with that headache right now).

I'm currently on the last gasp ...the tech guy told me to leave the CMOS battery out for an hour (I had unplugged the power and battery for a minute or two).

I might take it up to BestBuy for them to take a look as well. They got some diagnostic equipment that I don't have...anything to avoid shipping the whole thing back.

First reaction was power supply... don't remember what you said you have in there (wattage wise), but i do know your system is drawing quite a bit of power from it.

Second thought, mobo.... would suck, cause if your mobo fried, chance of your CPU, RAM, and Vid card(s) have been damaged as well.

good luck man, will be hoping for the best... (Power supply)

One little obscure thing I wanna throw out there for you: take the fan off the heat sink and check for dust, etc between the two. A buddy of mine (Bluelock from WoW) was having issues not completely different from your own and that's what it turned out to be. Safeties in the mobo prevented it from booting when things reached a particular temp. Like I said, obscure but who knows.

Good luck!

PS: I'm glad to hear everyone's feed back on Cyberpower. I've considered them for my next machine.

Also, if you're able to get into the bios... start disabling things one at a time, reboot, see if it makes any difference.

Be a good idea to make a note as to what you changed, and what you changed it from.

Bios accessibility is before the POST, so.... should let you in.

Thanks for all the tips.

I just didn't have the patience to try and chase down the problem which is essentially what I would've had to do.

Cyberpower's answer after talking with about my troubleshooting steps was to ship me a mobo. I can't tell you how annoyed I would've been to do all that only to find out it was something else (which may not have become apparent after swapping the mobo)...so I shipped the whole thing back to Cyberpower to deal with...

and this is where you play a little roulette in using them versus one of the big boys. I have to pay for the shipping...so, much of the money i saved using them has now been whittled away. It worked last time (i used buyxg.com), but not so much this time.

back on the old comp for now.

Sorry to hear it, but I'm interested in hearing how/if they make it right.

This is why I've built my own for my last three machines. Saves money and you can ensure you're buying good quality components. Also has the advantage of giving you exactly what you want. Cons are that if anything goes wrong you have to fix it yourself (though if you've built it in the first place this is usually not a problem) and you don't get any free bundled software (of which only windows and office is generally any use and I use Linux now anyway).

so i got my comp back...and those fucking guys at Cyberpower:

1) They're rude in Customer Service...I mean, really bad.
2) They're QA is horrible. I got my comp back and 1 memory stick was stuck in the back of the comp...wasn't secured in the memory slot.
3) I had to re-seat my NIC and re-install the software which they didn't bother to do...
4) I had to plug in all the USB and card reader cables in myself...I mean WTF?

The only positive thing is they actually did replace my mobo and one word of caution...I think I actually diagnosed why it ultimately failed. I'm interested to hear what you all think.

I recently moved into a new house (the charlotte move that was 18 months in motion)...well i had a floor plug installed and for space reasons (comp is under my desk) i decided to use a smaller, not as good power strip to hook up all the plugs. I think I fried the motherboard by not having enough of a power draw for the comp. Anyways, I switched to a better power strip / surge protector which seems to be doing ok.

I won't be using Cyberpower again and have thought about writing to PCWorld as they recommend them highly.

Very interesting to hear about as I've considered them for my upcoming machine. Based on your feedback and a few other recent negative reviews I've read, I'm nearly positive I'll be building my machine myself.

If you're happy putting components into a box, with a little bit of research for the purposes of compatibility, this is by far the best way to do it. My last three PCs I have built myself and I don't think I'd ever go back to buying them complete.

My review of CyberPower

2 guys in a garage building PCs...

While my machine is technically working, I get tons of game crashes when the vid card gets hot. it used to be 45 degress celcius, but it's been inching closer to 41 degress. i've tried getting all the latest drivers, .... it seemed to be more closely linked to my digital monitor. I'm not sure that the 2 components get along very well.

I'd liek to say it could happen to other aspects, but I haven't done much on it except WOW and just a few other apps (like word, excel, internet browsing, ...) All that seems fine.

oh yeah and all my USB ports are shut down. I tried calling their custoemr support but I had trouble finding my order number as they have NO WAY TO TRACK YOU DOWN BY YOUR NAME, PHONE NUMBER, ADDRESS OR EVEN CREDIT CARD NUMBER.

They are lame IMHO.

Well my comment for selfbuilt-comps and readybuilt-store-bought I have never bought a finished comp, except my Acer Ferrari 3000 and the HP/Compaq nx9010.
The latter bought from my father after the Acer burned down.

In short all my stationaries are selfbuilt, but with age I have become lazy.
Hopefully that's temporary,since I'm 21 so I think I'm just a late bloomer concerning puperty :-P

But I'm buying a finished comp now tommorow.

AMD Athlon 64bit 3300+
250 GB SATA
1 GB DDR-II 533 MHz
DVD +/- RW
Raedeon X1650 SE 256 --> 512 MB
Gigabit LAN

I am afraid of this but since it's a small town support is good. everybody knows eachother. And I am in geekville. :P

Update:

I have dropped the idea for a finished comp and have decided to built one myself.

The comp mentioned before is good and cheap for Greenlandic prices. Wouldn't be able to built one myself for the price.

Then about 8 hours after I wrote the earlier post, my co-worker and I went to the store to reserve the comp. When that was done he said he needed to buy a case for a 3.5" harddrive so he could use it as a external harddrive. But it was at the other store.
And then i began looking around. made some calculations.
Could get at better comp if I built it myself but it would be about 20% more expencive.
And for once I was struck by luck. Or sheer coincience. The store we were in was the store I had applied for a job.

Anyway after talking back and fourth asking for prices he asked if I had a bugdet.
Well as I did I told him how much my bugdet was and told him, by accident I might add, about the other computer.
I had a little thoughtfull look and turned around.
Then he asked for what parts I had been looking at and wrote a list. The gave me a 20% discount.

The money fit!

Now I am buying This Monday a comp that looks like this.

Intel P4 HT 3.2 GHz
300 GB SATA
1 GB DDR-II 667 MHz
Raedeon X1950 Pro 256 MB PCI-E
Gigabit LAN
8.1 Channal sound
350 Watt power supply (Will propably buy a 600 W or 1000 W next month)
Cabinet
Acer 19" TFT monitor 5 ms update
Window XP Home free in the buy as a gift he said for a young hopeful.

looks good Azz...except for the PSU which you already know needs updating. Why buy the 350 watt at all? Definitely go at least with a PSU in the high 500's

I agree, don't go for anything less than 500.

It came with the cabinet.
And I wam aware of it.
Next month I'm considering buying a 1000 W PSU. Gonna cost, but heck... I can take it with me for a long time.
