Computer was acting up and running a little slow with itunes and firefox. I restarted and the computer always freezes on the Window Log-on screen. Computer isnt busy but the mouse is frozen.

Also sometimes it doesnt make it to log-on screen...just gives me a nice XP blue colored screen with mouse and freezes (not a blue screen of death...just a screen colored in XP blue)

Last known Config did nothing same problem mouse dead and frozen center of screen. Safe mode went to a Blue screen of death (Bad_pool_Caller) is that Ram related?



All of which is odd because the only things I've done in the last couple days is Internet, Itunes, and Navy Fields. This morning I turned it on and everything was slower then normal.

And I dont have an XP disk...Dell doesnt ship with them (probably due to piracy....)

I would say this is either RAM or Virtual Memory related.
Up your VM or check for bad RAM

So i've run every diagnostic possible via Dell's Utility partition and also ran Memtest86. As well as trying all of Dells/Mircosofts trouble shooting procedures/

I dont have xp disk cause Dell doesnt ship with them so Im gonna try getting a copy of those from Dell.

How would I up the Virtual memory? can I do that in BIOS? or does the system need to boot for that?

Okay so I have XP Disks finally

Chkdsk ran to 100% fixed one or more errors-> no effect on systems freezing

At this point I've had a couple suggestions and want to know a little more before proceeding

Repair XP - reinstalling on top of old xp with a repair install - question will this option loose my personal data on my desktop/on my C: drive?

Fixboot - Another option someone mentioned, once again what are the effects of fixboot on data loss....

Really really want to save my data and explore all other options before having to set it back to factory state... x_x

I <3 Linux

So in an attempt to back up data I booted from a linux CD boot disk (linux can run from a disk...sweet hotness) due to the fact system repair wasnt doing the trick and was freezing and what not while trying to repair

Linux runs fine for now, and I can copy all my data to my external hard drive. So yay for saving my data.

Think once data is backed up i'll try repair one more time and then just kick it back to factory state.... bloody windows if Linux didnt have gaming issues and wasnt so bloody confusing to me I'd stick with it just to spite microsith

Sorry to threadjack, but anyone have tips for a problem I have with my laptop? Occasionally it will just turn off abruptly and refuse to boot past the first screen. I can hear the fan running super-hard all the time, so it seems like it could be a heat problem. I've also only noticed it recently, as the outside temperature has begun to rise significantly.
Do I need to get a new fan? Is there something I can modify settings wise that might help me out? Any tips for heat distribution from the computer? (It's on a regular plastic desk right now.)

You're right - it certainly sounds like a heat issue and that's what I'd pursue. The IBM T41 work provided me has had a similar issue twice. I don't know if the fans are crappy or if the shell is engineered poorly and presses too hard against the fan, slowing it down but it's clearly a problem. To resolve it, I've just had them replace the laptop shell (everything except the hard drive, which I swap from one shell to the other).

If you're still within the warranty period, get it replaced. If not, and you're comfortable with opening up your computer, do so and see what the fan(s) look like, specifically if there are scrapes or rub marks on them and if they spin easily.
