...you might be disappointed in hearing this news.

Excerpt wrote:
Since we’ve just gotten our ratings, and since it’s the topic of endless speculation, I can now give you the full and complete story on what you will and won’t see in each “version” of the game.

Please note this isn’t a design decision or something we can reverse. It’s a legal (or as good as legal) requirement to sell the game in that particular territory.

With that said:

The US version is rated M for Mature by the ESRB. If you buy the US version, you will not see nipples.

The German version is rated 18+ by USK. The German version has full gore, but will not have decapitation, dismemberment, and over-the-top type fatalities.

The “elsewhere in Europe” version is rated 18+ by PEGI and is unchanged.

That's what I know and what I can tell you.

I've gotta say I'm glad for the "M" rating. I'm not deluded enough to thing that will keep all the 12-year-olds out but it should certainly cut down on them.

Well, I spoke too soon.

That initial posting continued on for 20-some pages of rants and finally led to one more 'official' post pointing to an update thread.

Quote:
It has come to our attention that the North American edition of the game was submitted (by Eidos) to the ESRB without any server-side censorship:

-full blood

-full fatalities

-breasts with nipples

-not full nudity

The ESRB reviewed our application and gave us a rating of Mature 17+. The full rating with descriptors has not yet been publicly announced but will be
posted on the ESRB web site on 13 February 2008.

Funcom apologizes for this small error (or maybe two small errors.)

Ahh, while previewing this post, I think I see that Obo beat me to this. :P

It's pretty funny how stuff like this becomes such a big issue.

This is actually a very serious sociological question. Why is it that Americans are more sensitive to the sight of nipples than the rest of the world?

Is it simply because we cover them up all the time? Back in the 1800s it was obscene to see a woman's leg above her ankles. Again why? Is it just because we want to see what is forbidden?

My wife and I have been discussing this because as you know we'll be moving to Ireland, where it's not all that uncommon to see nudity on normal television. Our concern of course is for our children and how much to shelter them from this sort of thing, being that they will now be raised in Europe.

A question to you European males here: When an American male see a pair of naked breasts, we get aroused (usually). The visual sight of them is a sexual stimulant. So, my question is, would you say that it is the same for European males?

It's because America! land of the "free" likes to make a bid deal out of everything, I feel like other countries make it natural and downplay it a bit. I once went to a bar in the Czech republic...a stripper came out and danced. To no surprise, the ONLY people screaming and hollering were the Amercians...

Woman have a secret cult with Lobbyists that work very hard to keep breasts as the primary american male pasttime. Imagine what we could do in t he workplace if we could put our attention to other topics?

Matter of fact, that group might be well represented by the rest of the world if you think about the socio-political impact.

Having lived in Europe and been to their beaches, while you are alway on the lookout for the right set, you do tend to get used to them. After a while they become less of a big deal, unless you actually have something to work with ;).

But, you'll get off topic with hairy armpits and I recommend you don't go there.

Back on topic, it's all exposure really...kinda like drinking to a certain degree...you alway react to those things you can't have.

to answer the question about do european males find the sight of nipples sexually arousing(or something)

speaking for myself, id say no, but touching would be a diferent subject,
its probably not about seeing nipples all day or something, since im not seeing nipples all day

and i think americans are more sensitive because of multiple things, but i think its mostly because of overreacting, and probably a part of political correctness that is demanded(and some religious stuff about no looking at/touching parts of the female body before getting married)

Don't forget, that came from Europe before it came to the U.S. 8)

But America took it to a whole new level. It's a religion thing. Family Values, all that jazz.

Now, I've never really studied history, so my knowledge might be a bit off here, but wasn't America founded by Puritans? And, as such, there is a tradition of nudity etc. not being as accepted.

If you compare censorship between UK and US the main differences follow these lines:

Violence: reasonably ok in US, not good in UK
Sex, nudity etc.: not good in US, reasonably ok in UK

Those are the general trends. If you ask yourself why, a lot of it is to do with tradition and social opinion. As said above, I believe US was founded by Puritans who had a poor view of sex, nudity etc. but the right to bear arms is constituional, which makes violence less taboo.

In the UK and Europe in general, I think the attitude is taken that sex happens (teenage pregancy is quite high in this country, for example)! Don't get me wrong, young kids don't get exopsed to it (or rather it can be avoided), but there is more of an acceptance of it. On the other hand, we have a much stronger attitude against violence and exposure to violence in a social setting. so violence in films is rated more highly.

Casey wins the prize! I was waiting for that particular pairing to be made!

As for how straight-laced and prudish we Americans are, please don't group the entire country in with a loud-mouthed minority (we have lots of those here). I don't really care what other people think or do as long as they don't step on the toes of my freedom to do what I want. IMHO, people who get all up in knots over things that do not directly or realistically affect them need to have more difficult jobs. :P

i can think of a few ways this can end up being a bad game, even if it has nipples and people getting parts of thier body cut off

but yeah, america has alot of diferent groups of people, ive heard of people there that claim the earth is flat, doesnt mean everybody there thinks it is

oh, and maybe this part has something to do with all the school shootings, not sure though(heard theres a new one today/yesterday on the news)

"Violence: reasonably ok in US, not good in UK
Sex, nudity etc.: not good in US, reasonably ok in UK "

maybe its a combination of sexual frustration and easy acces to guns that allows it to happen

ok, now im just talking too much, il stop writhing stuff now
