http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/ ... redir=true - The Everquest 2 Forum Article

http://eq2vault.ign.com/fullstory.php?id=91 - The IGN Article

(Locked) thread on EQ2 boards which, in turn, links to an article at EQ2Vault.

Quote:
It is in this session that many revelations were delivered unto us. The first, there will be absolutely NO PvP at launch. You heard me correctly, there will not be duels, there will not be arenas, there will not be anything. Further, the developers refused to speculate on whether there ever will be. So if you are hoping for PvP, the wait may be a while. Senior Producer John Blakely said this, and when questioned about it, said that is the stance of the team at this time, and that there will be for 100% sure no PvP at launch.

And then, when Moorgard locked the EQ2 board thread:

Quote:

I'm locking this thread because of the disappointing display of poor behavior exhibited within it. And I mean that less from the PvP fans upset that their preferred playstyle won't be in the game than from those who are gloating about it.

We didn't decide to drop PvP out of vindictiveness. It's a decision we made based on what we want this game to become. EverQuest II isn't a PvP game, and we don't have any plans to make it one.

We can understand if that changes some people's plans about buying the game. However, our decision is that we want to spend our development time on the PvE aspects of the game.

The uproar by the fans was pretty funny to read...and since I've never played Everquest before I can't really comment further..

Yeah...I really had no clue if this was good or bad news, hehe.

I gues this is good because PVE will hopefully kick ass, and they did say that Everquest 2 wasn't going to be a pvp game, so there we go. :P

It's hard for me to imagine a game with no PvP, unless there is a *great* team behind the game. We'll see...

And in the same light, its hard for me to imagine a game that hasn't been seriously hurt by PVP.

PVP is fine and all, but the "Everyone must PVP or they SUXXOR" crowd really start to bother me after a while..

The only problem with PVP is the fact that those that don't wish to PVP are forced to either sit on the sidelines and watch as their classes are tweaked and wrecked for "PVP balance" while the PVP'ers jump from class to class trying to get the upper hand, ruining the entire game balance.

PVP'ers usually have no love for the game or the setting, its pure ego...

Yeah, I know that.

That's what you get when the only thing that matters is the time spent in the game to advance...

Once the technology advances enough for the MMORPGs to be basically huge FPS + adventure games, that will be awesome.

I don't mind getting killed by superior skill, but just because some kid lives in a basement 24/7 and would fry in the sunlight, because he plays a freakin' game all the time, can kill me and there is nothing I can do about it - that sucks.

Why does everything HAVE to be a FPS clone?

Why can't there be MMO's that are RPG's? What is SOOO wrong with having NO PVP? Or using tactics instead of Circle Strafing someone until dead?

I just don't understand the mindset I guess..

There is no tactics in building a lvl90 uber character to pwn everyone else.

In CounterStrike I can buy a deagle and kill and awper if I have enough skill and am lucky. And it's not just about circle strafing and firing anymore, there is sound, flashbangs, smoke, a lot of tactical stuff. Except the tactics comes from your own skill and creativity, not from computer skillboxes.

I am simply discussing games with PvP. Of course, there doesn't NEED to be PvP, but that is a different discussion.

I am just touchy about EVERY game that starts to come out, and the PVP fans go nuts when they find out it isn't Halo 3458 or Quake Tournament 2340 ....

It gets REALLY damn old...

Well, I see PvP as an endless event generator. The non-PvP stuff, like quests dugeons and all, cannot be in unlimited number (I don't count the "random missions", see what they look like in SWG...). So what happens if you succeed in doing every quests and dungeon out there, huh ? And it's likely to happen unless the devs know what they're doing, hence my first post

I good point was made. 90% of the balance/nerfs that have and will happen are due to PvP. PvE is pretty good right now especially with NPCs being much stronger now.
But balancing both PvE and PvP into on system is just an intense project.

Well, on the non-PvP servers in EQ, there are people that have been playing for 5 years... that says a little something about a games ability to entertain without PVP...
