What is involved in hosting a server? We decide when we play and that person hosts the games?

stopped by my local Best Buy after work and they had PS2 and XBox versions, but not PC until tomorrow. I did however find the following link:

http://www.starwars.com/community/news/2004/09/news20040907.html

Select Best Buy stores will be open at Midnight tonight, so if any of you are in those areas and can't wait... you can go get the trilogy and Battlefront tonight.

Hey one of those was about an hour away, but I could wait till this morn to get battlefront and stay away from the happy Star Wars heads. :)

I have it installed now, and it "looks like fun." I have some extreme slowdown problems that I'm looking into but even with those, I was happen some fun.

Driving a speeder was a blast! Moves at a much higher speed then they do in SWG and actually have a nice blaster on front. Running people down is nice also. Sad thing is, I don't think there is a way to control the speed. Either its Fast, slowing down to a stop, and stopped. Same with the planes which makes no sense. I'll have to do some extra research on the controls though.

Going to play around with single player (and work on correcting this lag issue) before I look at mulitplayer. Looks like you have to use gamespy to connect to servers, but I already had that installed. Could be some stand alone server options too.

Not a real review, but as soon as I get some smooth gameplay, I'll share my experiances.

I thought the concept to the game sounded great and then I saw a commercial where an Ewok was getting blasted. That alone would make it worth picking up.

Got it and there's lotsa fun to be had here.

Aircraft control a little wierd but I think it'll come together with practice.

Like Warnel said, the speeder is very fun.

Only problem are those damn Ewoks talking/cackling the whole time. Makes me wanna join the Empire side just for that.

I've played Hoth, Endor, Geonosis, Yavin, and Kashyykk islands.

Fav is probably Hoth and Geonosis right now. Those Clone Troopers vs droids battles are surprisingly entertaining.

I've only played a few maps, some run better then others on my system but I can tell that they did a fairly good job balancing the sides out. Sure the units are similar, but they did add enough flavor for each to make them feel unique.

Like the Jetpack uses for Republic and Imperial sides, one actually works how you would think a jetpack would, and the other just has you "leap forward" a great distance.

I figured out how to control the rides a bit. Some of them you have to hold up to make them move (ex- AT-AT, droid tank) while the others have a "cruising speed" (ex- X-wing, snowpeeder). You can hit up to make those kind go faster, and press down to slow them so they have 3 speeds (cruise, slowed, and acclerated). Left and Right make them bank.

I like Hoth a lot too, thought the map seems a little small. Or the snow speeder is to fast? Don't want them to slow it down though, soooo much fun buzzing around in them. I used the AT-AT a few times. Dumb AI parted a AT-ST right below me- he and his crew mate were crushed. Ah well. Funny thing is, I think it get stuck under one of the legs and I kept here it being dragged along all the way to the shield generator.

I think because you can't see to far down from the AT-AT. It is slow, has poor visuals, but has a lot of armor and strong (yet slow) front guns.

Still working on lag issues, but still have fun through them.

How about a comparison.
Compared to Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam, how is it?
Controls? The feel of controlling the craft. More arcade or simulation?
Graphics? More details? Faster graphic? Sharp?
Sound? Better or worse?

Just wanna know.

Can't help you most of those questions. Didn't play much of Battlefield 1942, but I would say this game is a little more arcade/faster pace. Your aim doesn't change regardless if you are crouched down or prone, and you don't have to toggle your weapon up into the firing position either. So it doesn't have the "realism" factor but it does have some fairly intense combat.

The control I like a lot, but maybe because I'm a videogame/computer gamer. Very very simple. Forward, backwards, turn left/right... fire main weapon, fire secondory weapon, jump, crouch, prone, reload (though you'll most likely use autoreload) and zoom are the main keys you'll be using.

Each class has two weapon slots. The first slot is your main weapon and a back up weapon (so like a rifle and a pistol.) You can't change what weapons you have, only way to do that is to pick a new class when you spwan. Each class also has a secondary weapon slot. The basic fighers have two types of grenades while the pilots have a tool to repair things (ships, droids, turrets, etc) and they can also throw out a cluster of supplies (bacta tank, ammo, energy). The scout class for the Rebublic also has a seeker droid that you can fly thought he battle field. It comes with a small blaster and can call in a one time bombardment on an area.

Some weapons use energy and rechage on their own, while others use ammo. To restock you need to visit a "power droid" and stand near it and you will see your ammo count going up. Or you can ask a pilot to hook you up with some supplies but the droids are very useful in the game. There are three.. I know what two of them do, ammo despenser and a medical bot that heals you.

Cant speak on graphics either, I think it looks great but I have all the settings on low.. But the sounds are great, familiar Star Wars sounds and music throughout. You'll learn to fear the sound of a snowspeeder quickly. :)

I did get it to work smoothly, and I was having fun last night. I took the chance of lagging someones server and got on mulitplayer but it ran just as well as single player for me. All I can say is I feel sorry for the Imperials. :) The battles are just nuts, and it is very scary to hear the sound of a snowspeeder coming after you. Those things are so fast, you better pray your not out in the open or the pilots will blast you and zoom off. I was ducking and cringing as I trid to run my trooper further into the battle.

I've read some complaints about the size of the maps which I thought might be a problem for the game but after playing it some more I do think they work. The main modes work some like Unreal Tournament where you have nodes that you are to capture but not in any real order. The majorty of the fighting takes place at these "command posts", or on the way to them so there isn't really a need for a lot of space. It helps keep the action at a high pace with there not being to much room to run around in but I found it to be more then enough.

I like this game... it was a lot of fun playing multi last night.

My chief complaint is that you can get killed as soon as you pop, and the vehicles are almost impossible for others not in a vehicle to destroy or escape from. Too much of an advantage to the vehicles. There was one game last night where I was on Hoth and the other team had an AT-AT that just kept firing at the spawn location and killing me immediately. Prior to being killed I sat in a turret for 5 minutes and fired constantly into the head of the AT-AT and dealt no damage whatsoever. Needless to say I died 15 times in a row without having a chance to defend myself or get out of the way once since it just fired shots into my spawn loc for the remainder of the battle.

Ouch. Guess you better join a better team next time to hold an alternate spawn point/command post.

j/k That would be annoying. Gonna try out online stuff tonight I think.

NO BATTLEFRONT FOR YOU!

I made a trip into town today to pick up the movies and game. Over a $100 dollars. DAMN YOU George Lucas!

I get home and watch EP 4 then go and try to install Battlefront. There is NO cd key on the box. I check online for any messages or tech support advice and can find none so I call EB to tell them. "Return it," they say, but I can tell they think I am running some scam. I drive back in and when they open the case I realize the frigging disk 1 is in my drive at home! Plus they don't have any extra copies to exchange anyway because a store employee has the last two reserved.

What a waste of a day this was. :(

Bah, hate to hear about the cd key. :( Maybe ask if they could give you store credit (or did they still not believe you?) and get them to call around to the other shops in the area to reserve you one... but might be to late now.

I had to deal with some spawn campers today. When the game is about to end and there is only one command center to spawn at, it can be very bad. As soon as you load in your dead because there are a few tanks parked right on top of you. I guess in war that tactic would make sense but in the game it is very fusrating.

And the tanks ARE hard to distroy. Missles hardly put a dent in them.. they are meant to do the most damage to vehicles but they don't seem to be doing much overall. Maybe they do have a few balancing issues but still I'm having fun.

Another negative is the gamespy in-game server search. It alright but there aren't much options, like filtering (did anyone see any?) or buddy list or even fav servers. You can use the downloaded gamespy browser (with more options) but it still feels sort of clunky.

Compared to bf1942, the sound and graphics are absolutely amazing...it's so hardcore, everything blowing up, getting fired upon, its like you're really in a true war.

The controls for vehicles, in my opinion, were alot easier in BF1942. The feeling of controlling an aircraft, I think is more arcade in this game....flying planes in BF1942 made me feel like I was actually flying them, like simulation. The ground vehicles I suppose are basically the same, though they don't seem to have the level of manuverbility that BF1942's vehicles had....though I haven't been in all the vehicles, so I don't know...though on the otherhand, BF1942 and this game has so many similiarities, the vehicle playing and flying may be the same...I honestly don't know...but it just feels like BF1942 planes were more easier to control/fly.

But anyways..overall, this game kicks some major ass, and I can't wait to play some multiplayer! :)

Picked up a microphone/headset today. Anyone else have/use one?

Sounds like we have a few Avians getting into this game. Wanna see if we can hook up and multiplayer together?

I've played mic-ed before using teamspeak.

I'd love to see us get a dedicated Avian server up.

I had a mic somewhere... got misplaced from moving, but I'll search for it. I know the X-box and PS2 have built in chat stuff, so does the PC also have support for voice chat? If not then it might be good to look into teamspeak.

I don't understand how to find servers though with the game's browser. Sometimes server show up and some times they don't... would we need some kind of outside program that would let us enter the IP of the server we wanted or maybe I'm missing something?

I got my copy running finally. I emailed tech support and they actually responded within a day. They had me email them a photo of the receipt and the cd case. They got back to me the next day with the cd key. I won't have a teamspeak headset till Monday though.

Wow! Great news. Isn't the internet great? Back in the day, they would have made you sent all of that via snail mail.

BTW, a little tip to help your system during muliplayer is to up the framerate. To do so, from the main menu after launching the game, go to options/muliplayer then you should see "ticks", either right click or left (forgot which) and set that to 30 which is its max. I've found a bunch of little tweaks to get it to run right and that was the last one that improved it I remember.

Opps, I figured it out (it being how to log onto servers without using the listing). You can go to muliplayer, then click on "direct connection", on the next menu you can select "enter IP" and "enter password", so you can log on to whatever server you want as long as you know both of those.

Looks like you have to create a new profile just to change your name - unlike BF1942/Vietnam and I can't get it to accept a mouse button push most of the time.

Well I might be able to play on someone elses server tonight though still trying to figure out my own. I am hoping to have my test server up Tue Night at 8.00 PM EDT.

Just a heads up, I just heard about it myself-

http://support.lucasarts.com/patches/Battlefront.htm

Quote:
Star Wars Battlefront

For PC: 1.00a Update

Patch Name: Battlefront1_00.exe

Platform: PC

Format: CD-ROM

Size: 2.66MB

Min. Requirements: N/A

Posted: 9/04

Installation: After downloading the update, double click on Battlefront1_00.exe to install. The installer will automatically search for the folder where you originally installed Star Wars Battlefront and install the update. If the update does not locate Star Wars Battlefront on your system, you may need to reinstall the game and then run the Battlefront1_00.exe.

This update for the game has been modified to correct the following:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Improves NAT negotiation for online games which may help improve multiplayer performance.

* Minor fix to server browser screen.

You can find links to download from the top link I posted above.

Just thought I'd pop in here and add my 2 cents. I bought Battlefronts a couple weeks ago for Xbox. I played it to death and beat all the historical campaigns and galactic conquests and such in about a 2 days. I don't have Xbox Live, which apparently is what this game is designed for, so it got old real quick. Great game design (although it's basically just a skin for BF1942 with some cool new features) and graphics, but it leaves a little to be desired without the MMO capabilities. So I traded it in for NCAA Football '05. Great game there.

Brief update by the dev team-

We would like to thank everyone for the various discussions that have been occurring on these boards. The team has spent a great deal of time reading and noting the various improvements and changes people have requested.

We are very committed to the on-going enhancements to Star Wars Battlefront on all three platforms. Over the past two weeks we've given each platform some quick improvements to deal with immediate needs. The team has also been working on many new enhancements and additions to the various platforms. Some of the things we are working on are: adding features to the in-game server browser, additional options for Hosts, a Linux version of the dedicated server software, resolving inconsistent results on the Leaderboards and many other improvements.

We also have some bigger things planned for the game that we hope to be able to speak about soon.

Thanks again for all the constructive feedback, please keep it coming.

The Star Wars Battlefront Team

And ANOTHER new patch can be found here:
http://support.lucasarts.com/patches/Battlefront.htm

Well the patches haven't done much for me, actually seem to have made the game worse. I'm thinking that the host servers haven't patched up and/or a lot of players haven't and that is causing my game to lag a lot more then it was before.

Sounds familiar... just like SWG patches!

For those who are interrested but can't afford here is a modhomepage for Battlefield 1942.

Galactic Conquest. A star Wars mod for BF1942.

Haven't found the file itself, but you can search through it.

I have it, loaded it, but never bothered to play it, since it is only for online.

New Patch is out and it comes with a new map (63mb file).

Won't be able to test it out until tonight, haven't really played this one much lately. I like the game, wonder if any of you still play some.

i find myself wishing I'd bought the PC version when i bought the Xbox version. If i had some of you guys to play with, the game would be loads more fun.

Sweet, I'll try that. I love playing the imperial trooper for some reason.
