I would have to try the "That is impossible, you radar must be broke" defense. :)

It wasn't a radar, but a plane and a stopwatch.

I figured that the Pilot called the state trooper, and the trooper verified the speed with a device more reliable than self calculations and a stopwatch, i.e. Radar.

Stopwatch = easy to be inaccurate.
Radar = harder to refute

BTW they were talking about this on FOX news a few minutes ago! Avian- where news comes fast!

This guys just lucky it wasn't California. He'd be in jail, and his car would have been impounded. They don't usually go that far, but the CHP has the authority anytime somebody is caught driving over 100 mph.

In Louisiana they can take you to jail if you are 20 over the limit. :shock:

But that does not mean the do.

Amazingly...this was on a motorcycle. :shock:

At that speed, a wipeout = a loooong red streak terminating in a little bit of hamburger. This guy's gotta have nerves of steel or is a friggin' looney.

Part that got me is that the state patrol was using a plane to catch speeders. Never heard of that.

In some states you may notice signs alongside the road indicating your speed is monitored by plane. Another giveaway is when you see a plane painted onto the side of the road. The pilots in these planes use them as markers for measuring how long it takes you to go from one marker to the next.

The stopwatch thing is actually accurate enough. The timing is accurate to 0.1s and there are special markings on the side of the road for the planes to use. Measuring the speed over a long periaod such as a quarter mile, which was reported here, is pretty accurate. The only thing is, there is not really much record of it - unless they got the thing on tape, which would be cool.

The good ol' USA has enough flat, straight roads that you can achieve speeds like that. They use the planes to control speed in places where speed really doesn't need to be controled - in the middle of nowhere.

As for doing it on a bike - that's the cheapest way. To buy a car that could do this, you would have had to spend a lot more money.
