I've started typing this post a number of times, not able to really convey what I'm thinking right now. So lemme just throw some words and phrases at ya. They all apply to HL2.

Beautiful. Amazing. Clever. Impressive. Detailed. Fulfillment of hype. Immersive. Worthy successor. Physics, physics, physics. Suspenseful. Suck-you-in gameplay. Very well-done scripting. Phenomenal AI.

I got up early this morning with my daughter, thought I'd check to see if it was unlocked. It was and so I've been playing ever since. :D

I think all of the HL2 players owe it to the non-HL2 players to do a more formalized version of a review in the hopes they'll give it a chance and see just what we're going to be babbling about for quite some time.

Is HL2 something we can play multiplayer?

Nope. But there's CounterStrike: Source. Basically CS under the Source engine with some map improvements.

There is Counter Strike. A terrorists vs counter-terrorists multiplayer game. very quick and loads of fun. Can be up to about 20 vs. 20 people. There are different scenarios like the terrorists need to plant a bomb and the CTs have to stop them. The CTs need to rescue hostages or the CTs need to help a VIP escape.

Counter Strike has long been one of my favorite games. Great for a quick 20-30 mins of very intense team type playing.

There is also Day of Defeat, which is WWII combat using the HL and now HL2 engine. Never played it much but there is a huge following.

Isn't there a HL and now will be HL2 multiplayer arena type game? it's not story driven, just run around and kill type thing.

The real joy of HL2 will be the engine. The physics are amazing and very realistic. The SDK has only been out for a week or so, but soon you will be seeing all sorts of maps and games based on it. Should be truly awesome.

I forgot about Team Fortress. It doesn't appear on the list of products for the silver or gold packages and I haven't heard anything about it either.

Don't forget EQ2 and Football Manager. :)

Nope. There isn't any HL2 multiplayer sadly. The only thing that comes close is CS:S. No "Deathmatch" type stuff like what came with HL1. I've been checking but haven't found the answer if the Half-Life 1 Source (remake of the 1st game) has mulitplayer or not. If it did I think I would have heard that by now.

<<oh and I'll my review later on>>

Not to bad. I had a crap TNT something or other card I had just installed just to set up my computer before my newer card got here and it actually was able to run counterstrike: source, though a bit laggy and missing a lot of the visual effects.

Minimum:
º 1.2 GHz Processor
º 256MB RAM
º DirectX 7 graphics card
º Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
º Mouse
º Keyboard
º Internet connection

Preferred:
º 2.4 GHz Processor
º 512MB RAM
º DirectX 9 graphics card
º Windows 2000/XP
º Mouse
º Keyboard
º Internet connection

I bought it today and hurried home early to play it. I still can't get into Steam to create my account... apparently once that's done, it'll be easy to unlock.... but no account = no play.

I'm having flashbacks to SWG:Live day 1

And Player Cities:Live day 1

heheheh.. ahhh.. memories.

Well... looks like I won't be playing HL2 anytime soon. My machine is crap. The 1.2 gig processor requirement kills it for me.

Right, once you get an account and log in then it should start unlocking the game on its own. When that is finished, then you can play single "offline" without having to get on steam every time.

5 hours later of continually clicking Create new account.... Register... send me my password... etc, it looks like it defaults out and let's me play locally.

Bastardos.

That's nasty and completely unecessary IMHO. That's likely the mark of Vivendi, not Valve.

Saw an example of the jaw-dropping physics HL2 seems to excel at. I had taken out a soldier as he was standing on a dock (I won't tell you exactly how but it did not involve me firing a weapon  ). His body landed in the water and he floated. Cool enough, but, when I hopped in the water to make sure I wasn't missing any ammo or weapon he may have dropped, the splash I made moved him, making his body bob up and down and start to drift away from me. Twitchy trigger-finger I am, I losed a brace of rounds from my pistol just to be sure and when I did, the bullets pushed him under the water and accelerated his drift away from me.

I realize this may sound trivial and silly, but just think of the potential behind an engine that can demonstrate all that!! The thing is, too, you see the effects of the engine's physics everywhere. You may have to make use of them to escape an area or to take out some baddies, it truly seems like real life from that point of view. They did an excellent job.

/gush off ;)

Very amazing. I'm extremely impressed. They have an extremely solid and flexible physics and character animation engine. Very, very cool.

Worth the wait and frustration... but it definately hurt my first impression.

I love the little puzzles of having to pick up cinderblocks and drop them onto boards to make ramps that you use to jump onto things... those add so much flava.
