Anyone got some good PHP-MySql resources, mainly begining level. I currently have a Windows 2003 IIS 6 server with PHP 5.0.3 and MySQL 4.1.9 all installed and seeming to work together well. I am wanting to start working on a few PHP pages, nothing major but a beginning none the less, kind of to get my feet work so I can get comfortable with all of it so I can start using it at work eventually.

Anyways any good web references, maybe even books (although funds are limited atm, I might be able to talk work into getting a few book references).

A while ago I wanted to learn that stuff so Obo recomended a book for me from the, "Sams Teach Yourself" series. I never got around to it though so I can't give any recomendations myself.

Funny, a girl in my office is just learning PHP, also.

I recommend searching the web and going through those online references. There's some really good ones out there. That was how I learned 90%. I also had an outdated PHP manual that had 3-year old commands (until Obo corrected the error of my ways).

I'm an ASP and JSP programmer, so it was very easy to pick up PHP -- just slightly different syntax.

In terms of books, if you don't have any other programming experience then I think "Sams Teach Yourself PHP in 24 hours" is a good start. The one I have lying around is for version 4, but it has probably been updated.

If you've done other programming, then you should be able to pick up PHP pretty easily. "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Welling and Thomson, published by Sams, might be a better start. Again might be a newer version than what I have.

As for web resources, all I really use is the PHP manual at http://www.php.net and perhaps http://phpbuilder.com from time to time.

Thanks guys, and yeah I do have programming experience, although a little rusty atm. In the past I have programmed in Pascal, Cobal, Fortran, Basic, Visual Basic, C, and Visual C. Been a few years.

also codewalkers.com is a good place.

PHP is really straight forward so just dive it really. I have a few reference books but the one i use the most is just the PHP Bible. It was just recently updated for PHP5 so now is a good time to pick it up.

Also, since PHP and Mysql link so well together yet most PHP books dont really get into SQL much I would pick up SQL Visual Quick reference by Chris Fehily. SQL is amazingly simple and this is a no bones great reference book.

speaking of.
I have been looking all over for a good GD guide.
Specifically I need a tutorial on editing the filesize of an image. What I am trying to do is that if an image is uploaded at 3mb it would run through this function and get compressed by 10% until its filesize reaches the target of say 2mb.

I know GD can do this but I just cannot find a tutorial on anything like this. I seem to only see tutorials on making images and resizing the dimensions of an image.

oh, and for you folks that run your own servers. http://eth0.us is a great site for apache and cpanel security tutorials.
