My dog is sick! Her name is Maggie. She is 7 years old.

Wednesday, Maggie was acting tired all day, but she is lazy sometimes and it was nothing new. However my wife knew something was wrong when she came home from work and Maggie did not greet her. Danyale checked Maggie out, saw that she was limp, and panicked. I had to restrain her, and reassure her that Maggie was probably in a deep sleep and did not like being woken up so fast.

Well from then on Maggie was not acting right. She did not eat her treat, which she normally gobbles up. She did not want to go outside, which she loves to do. She just walked real slow, and kept her tail down instead of wagging it all over the place. After class I came home to find a big black stain on my carpet. Maggie has not peed in the house in many years… but something was wrong with her and she had an accident in the house. And it was full of blood.

The vet fit me in that afternoon, and after looking Maggie over said that she was anemic. He said he body was attacking her red blood cells and he did not know why. He cases like this once every year or two. Her blood tests results will be back this afternoon and hopefully we will know more.

Danyale is a wreck over this. She treated Maggie like our only child sense we have not been able to have any kids of our own. I know it is not the same, but to D it might as well be the same.

Here are some pictures. She is the black one.

Mia, my little girl, is eight... and I am VERY protective of her... and I get ill when she gets sick...

So I can relate... I would assume there are treatments that can help her, no? I actually have Mia on "Doggie Insurance" through Banfield Pet Hospital to help defray the medical bills for her...

Best of wishes for Maggie...

Man, I'm sorry. Let D know our thoughts and prayers go with you guys. It's tough going through something like this with a loved one - even the 4-legged kind.

Yikes! Well best of luck to you and D Cyrus. I'm a fellow pet lover and I can understand how you'd feel. I hope Maggie gets better soon.

Keep us posted.

I cant have any dogs in my apartment complex so here are my babies.

I am one of the biggest dog lovers out there and know your pain D and Cy. Dogs are easily one of the family as any other human member.

Maggie will pull through soon enough. My grandmother's dog had a similar thing happen and after treatment Sammi is back to, and even more perkier than ever.

Rom, you REALLY need to clean out that tank. There's all KINDS of garbage in there that will most definately prevent your fish from thinking properly.

Thanks guys! I knew you all would be great, but being that Danyale is so new to Avian, I am sure she will be greatly comforted by your kind words. $100 says she will be crying by the time she reads this post.

Well the following info is one of those things from a friend of a friend of a friend over the internet.... so it could very likely be untrue.

This morning, When I told my mother about Maggie, she instantly asked what I moped the floor with. Evidently, Many months ago my mother’s maid had told her to stop using the Swifter kitchen floor cleaning product. The maid has a maid friend who emailed her saying one of her clients dogs died due to liver failure... and the solution the mop uses MAY have been the cause.

Well it turns out I mopped our kitchen Monday, using that Swiffer stuff. I have used it before with no ill effects… but the proximity to me mopping and Maggie getting sick does worry me.

I brought the Swifter solution to the Vet incase it could help him figure out what was wrong with her. The nurse said that these rumors come out with every new cleanign product. Last year they said the same thing about fabreez… and the year before it was something else. The Vet was going to look into it, but told me it could just be another false rumor.

As far as a treatment. They need to know the cause before they can treat. One treatment the vet mentioned was a blood transfusion. But again they need to figure out the problem before they can stop it.

Mia had a similar problem to this a few years ago.... she was having bladder control issues and there was some blood in her urine.. turned out to be a bladder infection... some antibiotics and prescription dog food got her back to tip top condition...

Here is hoping it is something more like this as opposed to something serious.

Thank you all for your thought s and prayers, please continue to keep Maggie in your prayers until she pulls through. Cyrus was right...I was actually crying(and I am still crying) when I saw the post listed as My dog is sick, before I even read the first post.

Some of the tests came in and it is her immune system that is attacking her red blood cells. The vet has her on steriods in hopes that it will make the immune system stop attacking. Also, this evening the vet has done a blood transfusion.

It is so sad to come home to an empty home; give all of ya'lls four legged creatures a big hug.......

:( So sorry. We have a pug and 4 guinea pigs... so I hate to hear about other pets in pain. My wife is studying to be a vet, and works as a vet assistant. She's said she's seen 3 anemic cases with dogs coming in to get transfusions, and all three did well afterwards. Is it the Deficiency kind of Anemia (caused from lack of nutrients)?

Expensive, though (if it makes you feel any better about spending money, we just had a Guinea Pig go through a $450 surgery... pets are expensive, but worth it.

First off, let me say I'm very sorry to hear of your sick doggy! I'm confident she'll be up and around soon!

Second, this post was the first to catch my eye after finally returning and I had to post! I, too, am definitely a dog-person and miss having a dog very, very much! My chow went through something similar to what it sounds like Mant's did. She whimpered so pitifully, I slept by her crate to keep her company! :P Pets can be a lot of work and money but are sooo worth it!

Get well soon, Maggie!

That Swiffer thing does sound a little weird. I mean seriously, what chemical isn't bad for your pet?

Talon, I knew you would say something. :P

So far Maggie has had 2 blood transfusions.

For an unknown reason here immune system started attacking her red blood cells. The doc said it was not her nutrition. He did say an onion could do this sort of thing to dogs. But for her size she would have to eat ½ of an onion… Maggie did not eat any onions, we don’t feed her any table food at all. The Doc said besides onions, this type of thing just happens in dogs… like lupus just happens in humans.

She is on a medicine that will correct her misguided immune system... but because she is a small dog large doses of the medicine are not possible. Therefore the medicine must be slowly added to her system. Evidently her natural blood production could not overcome her slowly correcting medicine altered immune system... so a second blood transfusion was needed to keep her strong during her immune system’s medicated change.

The Doc says she is eating good again and he has placed her on a special blood building diet. I am sure I will learn more about whether she will need to remain on this diet when she is discharged. The Doc says Maggie is playing with the nurses and wagging her tail often. He almost thought she would come home yesterday, but the blood tests at the end of the day showed that she was not quite ready for that. So she will be home any day now.

Also, last week the Doc said that she would likely have to stay on this medicine for many years. But now he says he is takign to the medicine so well that she may only be on it for a few months. That is a good sigh showing that she is responding very well to her treatments.

I have a cat who has been with me through thick and thin; the only constant thing in my life for the past 8 years. Pets are great, it's the unconditional love thing. I'd be heartbroken if anything happened to my "baby".

So it's great news to hear Maggie is responding well to her treatment :D

Good news Cyrus...

Man, that must be expensive. But totally worth it. I would do the same for my dog. I wish you could get pet insurance... well, hmm, you probably can somewhere. At any rate, I wish my employer offered it!

When she was at the vet Maggie was on a double dose of medicine that suppresses her immune system. We have to get it to where her body makes new blood faster than her immune system destroys it. 5 Days ago when she was released she was put on half a dose to see how things will balance out. The Doc wanted us to return in 5 days so that he could get another reading on her blood count after being on the lower dose of medicine.

Even though for the last 5 days she has been taking ¼ the medicine…. Her blood count increased 2%. The Doc is very pleased with these results. We are to keep all medication the same and report back in 10 days. Eventually when we are 30 days away from release and Maggie is still making new blood faster than she is destroying it, the vet may reduce her dose again, and we will repeat the whole process again.

Ideally the Doc wants to get her off this medicine… and it is a stepping down process where we keep examining her to make sure her body is making new blood faster than it is destroying it.

I have pet "insurance" of a sort... monthly payment to Banfield pet hospital covers all Vet visits, shots, and yearly checkups...

Things of the magnitude that happened with maggie would of course cost extra, but I do get a very nice discount on such procedures and meds...

It's nice to hear Maggie is getting better.

Althoug it sounds like its going to take some time before she's well,
its better to know what it is, and be able to do something about it.

Maggie is almost as good as new. To a stranger she probably looks normal. Danyale and I can tell she is not 100%, for example she still does not have the strength to jump up on the couch, she tires quickly, and pants alot. But she is active and playful as if nothing bad ever happened to her.

Her first visit showed that her blood count rose 2% over 5 days. Her most recent doctor visit went even better with her blood count rising 10% over 10 days. The doctor was noticeably excited about her progress. He told me at this visit that Maggie had been down to 10% blood count when we first brought her to the vet…. and that most vets do not think you could bring them back after they dropped so low. Yet Maggie is recovering with amazing progress and her blood count is back to normal levels.

As soon as we finish her current bottle of medicine we will be switching her to a lower dose. When we switch Maggie over to the lower dose we will have to watch her like a hawk to make sure she stays ahead of the game. The key is to wean her off the meds, or find the lowest dose where her body can continue to make blood faster than her immune system destroys it.

My thanks goes out to everyone who supported us and prayed for us. Your words did more for us than you will ever know. Also I would like to send out a special thank you to Rocky, Kharlaq, Talon, Yak and the other well wishers. I received your package today, and I have to say that I am just about speechless. What a completely unexpected surprise. Thank you guys very very much!

Got a bit worried

Got 2 tiny ones myself (Billy 6 years old papillon and Minus 1 year old phalene), and I know just how helpless I feel when they get sick.

Like 2 weeks ago when Minus by accident ate a bag of Läcerol Giants. Got sick as a dog... (But at least the breath was real fresh?) Poor lill thingy

I never had a dog, but those who live upstairs at the block I lived at the time had a schaefer I think it's called.
It was born same day as I, but it got sick at age 10.
A lungdicease.
Totally cried when it was sent to the Millers Farm.

Even though I didn't have a pet for myself I somehow know how it is.
Remember that we once had a birtday party for both me and "Rolf" as his name was. A cake to each. His last birtday.

I'm so glad that Maggie has it better.
