Just watch Forrest Gump. You'll get all the Alabama culture you want. :) :P

Not a commonly heard phrase over here. :)

I might be flying down that way for work at some time. Where and when are you going? I'll be spending some time in Montgomery.

If you do go there... I hope you can spend some time in other parts of the country. The other 97% of America is sooooo much different from Alabama.

Alabama is cool in many ways, but it is lacking in many ways. I guess that is true everywhere in the world.

Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama: Being a member of these elite 3 states, I think I am allowed to say that Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama typically are seen as the worst 3 states in the United States. While it is true that we come in last in almost every poll (public education, population wealth) much of our negative image has to do with our weaker economy and how backwards we were when it came to civil rights and the discrimination of blacks. From what I can tell from my time working across the country, today’s discrimination is no more than any other state, in fact I am willing to bet it is even less.

Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are great places for outdoors sports. Hunting, fishing, camping, and enjoying nature are big here. We are part of the SEC the college conference known for living it up, partying, drinking, and playing a mean game of American football. Consistently we are known for having the best tailgating atmosphere and the some of the most beautiful college campuses in the country. For football games my college seats 92,000 people in its stadium, however routinely we have 135,000 to 160,000 people come and party it on campus for the game. My college is the king of this, but I understand that the rest of the south is right there with us in the party department.

I have 2 groups of family who moved from Louisiana to Alabama… maybe I should read more into that. From my time visiting them, Alabama has many cool and fun places to visit.

The north east side of Alabama has a strong tech region focusing on rockets, missiles, and things of that sort. NASA has a campus there where many of yesterdays great space rockets were created, and today’s newest space (and military) innovations. It has been many years sense I visited NE Alabama, but I am sure you can tour many of the space and science facilities.

The southern most part of Alabama touches the Gulf of Mexico. The beaches are great, not as amazing as Sand Destin Florida, but darn close. The trouble with the beaches in the gulf is the Mississippi river (largest in the world) empties so much sediment into it. If anyone invites you to a Louisiana beach, turn them down and never talk to the again. However Alabama’s beach is far enough away form the Mississippi delta that they are very nice. Last summer I vacationed down there with my other group of relatives and it was very beautiful. Two or three weeks after my vacation ended a hurricane came through and miles and miles of beach property was destroyed. I hear they are still trying to rebuild, so no telling how fun they are right now.

All in all Alabama is not a bad place. It may have a bad reputation from its past… but much of what you hear is no longer true.

I live right next door, in Georgia ... that is about as close to Alabama as I care to get. I did however cross the border into Alabama, years ago when I was 17 .. you see, I was lost trying to get to Panama City, Florida .. and somehow, I don't know how, but somehow I ended up in Alabama. First and only time I've even been there :)

I am an Alabama resident. IMHO Alabama is a nice place to live if you're not into the big city life. Down here the weather is usually mild (sometimes getting below zero). I am 17, I can only remember it snowing 3 or 4 times here.

I live in Opelika, right next to Auburn and Auburn University. During the Football season is when the city is packed. The University Stadium will seat 85,214 people, but there are always people without seats standing around. Might i add they have the third largest library, to Harvard and Princeton.

Alabama may may lack education funding, but we have one of the hardest graduation exam in the country. There have been doctors and teachers who have failed the test.

Heheheh... Dayeth finally posts, and it's in defense of Alabama. There's something funny there, but I can't quite put my finger on it. ;) :P

I know we're talking about Alabama, but I thought it would be interesting to note one of the initiatives my company is undertaking in neighboring Mississippi.

The great thing about many areas in the deep South is that they provide a source of cheap, but educated labor (some of you will note Hattiesburg is within 50-100 miles of 5 major universities), and coupled with the tax breaks / incentives, plus the significant inflationary salary increases being seen in traditional 3rd world off shoring countries the gap is beginning to close from a cost standpoint. Add on top of that one of the largest sectors of growth over the last fews, and projected to be over the next several, is the US Government which is beginning to mandate that their work be done at home, not abroad.

So start cooking curry in Alabama, Miss., etc...it's the new India ;)

Property Taxies here are the lowest in the country. Even if we doubled the tax it would still be lowest. Mainly, this has attracted many car companies like Hyundia and Mercedes.

This is true compared to neighboring Georgia, starting salaries in Alabama are about 10% to 8% less.

I have been to Alabama as well as Florida beaches. The water is usually not as clear as the beaches on the Atlantic Coast.

Oh yeah! I had heard they were putting a Hyundai plant in 'Bama. I'm a proud driver of a '04 Santa Fe myself. Good, reliable vehicles there. I've enjoyed it.

Hey, hey!

I didn't wanna get info about the rest of the state. I just wanted to know if someone lived there so I maybe could get in contict with some. Apparently there is one. Royur Agnor also, but he's inactive.

First of all I know nada about the trip. Secon, I have not yet recived words from the organization that is taking care of it. There might still be 50 or 60 young kids like me who has applicated.

All I know right now is that I am going (if I am going at all) to a compus were I meet other youth at my age, and will have to exchange cultural experiences with the others.

I wanted to know if there was someone here in Avian who lived there if the other host family said no in general, in other word got cold feet about having a greenlandci person about age 17-20 living at their place.
So I was encuorage to find another family who might be able to host me the first and the last 2 or 3 days.

BTW, how old do you have to be before you can buy liquor in Alabama? Just wanted to know if I can party along side with others. (Hope it's not 21, since the age limit of 20)

I think he means you have to be 21 to legally drink.

That's right. But we're talking about Alabama here. There's a bottle of shine holding up the 4th leg of every coffee table in the state. :P

Yes, as of a 1997 or 1998, every state in the US required you to be 21 or over to buy liquor. Louisiana was proud to be the last state where drinking at 18 was legal, but federal highway dollars forced us to up it to 21 like the rest of the country.

Well if everythings goes right I am going to Alabama the 23rd of June.

Chosen as the best paticipant of four!??

Now I have to get my passport out of my father. He is holding it back against my will so I have to talk to the chief of police on monday.
Or try to get a new passport within a week.

Wish me luck.
